A lot of people talking about Floyd making Maidana use "pillows". If both sets of gloves are the same weight and basically the same dimensions, how much difference does the difference in brands really make?
Read the comments in here. It has already been discussed. http://www.boxingforum24.com/showthread.php?t=506653&page=6
It's the 'basically the same dimension' bit that's the issue here - a 25% increase in padding density could reduce the glove in size by 5mm or a quater inch, maybe less. That's 'basically the same dimensions' but potentially a significant increase in energy transfer. How big a difference? The variables are beyond my limited physics (and the time I'm willing to put into the problem), but if you figure that a coupla of percent could make a real difference I think it's fair to say that it's not a negliable issue. I'm sure you can find out more about it yourself but looking here:- http://www.madehow.com/Volume-6/Boxing-Gloves.html suggests that a useful line of enquiry might start with the Wayne State University Sports Biomechanics Dept. who seem to be the go to people for the testing of boxing equipment.
The POWER increases because of less connection time with less padding. Same energy delivered in a shorter time. If the connection time is 50% higher with more padding, the power decrease is above 30%. We are talking milliseconds here, so the connect time % increase is potentially significant (very likely above 25%). It might be the difference between being wobbled badly or slightly hurt by a punch like this: http://mkerala.com/n/di/Z926/insta005.gif
But its the same AMOUNT of padding right? Its just how compacted it may be. Like I said, they're still 8oz. I have a feeling its more to do with a mental aspect. Some people just like certain gloves, and they get used to them. Maybe it does make a difference, but not the level some people seem to be making out
Floyd beat him This content is protected . Yet the bigger, stronger, younger, dirtier tactics Maidana and team are crying. Only in boxing people. Only in boxing.
It's about distribution of padding. Mexican style has less on the connecting part of the glove (knuckles), so they are harder and connects for a shorter period than the softer gloves with more on the knuckles. They are totally standard gloves. Many fighters used that type on this very same card, Broner being one.
Thinking about it in terms of contact time is a bit weird. I'm not even sure it's technically correct. You can express transfer of of momentum in terms of contact time but it's probably not helpful in this case. The aspect of padding that needs to be considered is the reduction in acceleration of the target caused by the padding - or to think of it in another way the change in the way the force is transferred. The more padding you have them more of the force it will absorb. You then have other aspects to consider such as padding density (higher density = less force absorbed). Apparently these gloves have been questioned before by both the Froch team (Bute wears them) and the Burns team (Crawford wears them) and do have a lot of weight in the wrist, rather than the knuckle part.
Yes of course they matter. Why did Floyd make such a big deal out of it then if they didn't matter? Ask yourself this question first. We're talking stock version commission approved Everlast MX gloves used by many professional boxers at nearly every event.
Im asking an actual question, not looking for theories. How much of a difference does it make? 0.5%? 1% or does it actually make a noticeable difference. I'm erring towards the former.
The reason this mess started is because of the gloves hecho in Mexico, inspected by Antonio Margarito. Anyone would be suspicious too. This is the first time I've heard Floyd make a big deal with gloves other than when he asked for 8oz gloves against Cotto who pussied out and said no. Still doesn't take away from the fact, that Floyd is 46-0 beating up guys with pillows yet he has a KO% close to Pac.
I actually have a question about the whole glove thing as well, are people mad he choose Maidana's gloves or are people mad he did it the day before the fight because as far as I know a lot of top fighters ***** about the gloves there opponents wear
i can't give you a figure, but i can understand how hard, dense padding yields different results to soft, plush padding. it's simple and obvious.
