Lots of fights throughout history could have had a much different end result with ONE little tweek...the ref. Here are some examples... Manny Pacquiao vs Juan Manuel Marquez I result: 12 rd draw could have been: Pacquiao TKO 1 Marquez. Marquez was dropped three times, and after the third knockdown, Marquez laid on the canvas for a bit, with his gloves covering his face, looking like he wasn't the least bit concerned with the fight being stopped, and had there been another ref in there (Jay Nady) it might have been stopped. The significance? Being it was an easy KO, there probably wouldn't have been a rematch, and nobody would think JMM has Pacquiao's number today. Buster Douglas vs Mike Tyson result: Douglas KO 10 Tyson could have been: Tyson KO 8 Douglas. Douglas went down in the 8th, and took his sweet time getting up. Maybe he was going of the ref's count, but that count was mighty slow. Another ref (Richard Steele) could have counted faster, or waved the fight off, because Douglas supposedly looked "too hurt". The significance? Tyson still would have gotten beaten eventually, but it wouldn't have been THAT night, although there would be plenty buzz that Iron Mike finally showed some vulnerability, and there probably would have been a rematch, which Tyson would have trained harder for, and KO'd Buster legit. Meldrick Taylor vs Julio Ceaser Chavez result: Chavez TKO 12 Taylor could have been: Taylor W 12 Chavez. Do I really need to explain this one? Despite being physically brutalized, Taylor would have had his victory, and Chavez would have had lost his 0 much sooner than he ultimately did. Keep in mind that I'm not saying the fights shouldn't have had the result they did, just saying that had there been another ref in there, the course of boxing history (in some aspects) would have changed. Can anyone think of some more?
Nigel Benn KO10 Gerald McClellan. After beïng knocked out of the ring Benn amazingly got up at 9, only to be brutalised by McClellan for the rest of the round. Alfred Asaro let it continue, while a lot of other refs (steele for instance) would have stopped the bout. The outcome could have been a TKO1 for Gerald, but it became one of the greatest but saddest thrillers in boxing history.
One no one will probably mention Sam Peter vs Mccline After that thrid knockdown another ref could have possibly stopped it and Mccline the winner.
Benn McCellan is a great example but the ref who stops it in the first would have been wrong. Benn was still in play as proven by the 2nd round and the rest of the fight.
And of course there are instances where the referee just totally screwed the fight up. Sven Ottke UD12 Robin Reid Referee Roger Tilleman warned Robin for almost everything he did, including hitting Sven in the face (if you're going to allow that in boxing where does it end) 'misjudged' the KD delivered to Sven and called it a slip. And stopped the action everytime Sven was in a tight spot. It went to the judges and even if only the KD was given correctly Robin would have won a SD.
Possibly Mayweather-Mosley, when the ref stopped Mayweather for no reason as Mosley was stumbling into the ropes in round 9 I believe. It could have been a knockout right there.
Bowe - Golota II Bowe was taking such a beating the fight could be (even should be) stopped before Golota had thrown the deadly combo in the 9th round. It wouldn't change much in boxing, though, as Golota (technically the loser) was the one who got a shot at Lewis anyway, but it would be definitely good for Bowe's health.
Two leap to mind. Mayorga would have beaten Spinks. (IMO, he did). We had unwarranted point deductions and a KD of Cory was not counted. Tszyu would have beaten Hatton if David Paris had prevented the WWF stuff, not to mention the elbows and the deliberate low blow. In Vegas with Smoger or Bayless, different result.
And of course, one that keeps coming up. The unwarranted and premature stoppage of Peter Manfredo by Joe Calzaghe. Peter was just playin' rope-a-dope. He only took a couple of dozen unanswered shots, and was well on his way to wearing out Calzaghe. With proper reffing, Manfredo by TKO in 4.
I'm not to sure its the refs fault in this fight. Did they not agree the no 3 knock down rule was in effect before the fight. I mean when you watch the fight, Lederman gives the rules in the HBO broadcast. I know in WBA has the 3 knock down rule in effect in their title fights but this fight was a unification fight, with the IBF belt on the line also, IBF rules don't have the 3 knock down rule. As far as i'm aware the no 3 knock down rule is in effect in all unification fights now adays? (i might be wrong or maybe they just agree on it pre fight). But you're right, it did look like somebody forgot to tell Marquez!
Froch-Taylor maybe. Taylor was ahead on the scorecards when the ref stepped in. Think it was the right decision though, Carl was landing hard consistent blows
Also in that 1st round when G-Man was going in for the kill after putting Benn through the ropes, Asaro kept holding & pushing McClellan back and wouldnt let him finish it :nono
