Because it's the pros. Frazier made a huge mistake of trying to bomb his way out of trouble by only using left hooks, and at the wrong range. He should have either moved in a circle and made Foreman find him, or he should have charged in faster and gotten closer before firing his punches. He did neither, which allowed Foreman to tee off on him.
perfect focal height, man Foreman was some beast eh! Foreman vs Marciano, Tyson, Tua, the Pres, Bowe all would have been good fights. How did Foreman v Chuvalo go, was George in it, the little George?
just watched it and yeah remember it now, good first run for Chulavo, I think in the second he realised this is going to be a long night, looked difficult for him to get in. and in the 3rd Foreman just blasted him out. OUCH!
Foreman pretty much clobbered Chuvalo and used him as a punching bag. Chuvalo was a big strong tough heavy, but Foreman was just on a whole other level.
Pro's. Pretty much an unwritten rule that you can shove the shoulders to get quick seperation, as long a you punch, though it is technically a foul. Same thing with clinching, really. Technically, holding is bad. Really, every single pro fighter holds. You could call the shoving egregious, but Foreman always following it with big punches that clearly did big damage. Referee was either old school(Most likely), or didn't want to break up the action, because the champ was getting mugged(Refs used to HATE inserting themselves in fights. We need some of that back.)
It's not like it's the first time I've noticed it or think it was in some way the single factor that led to Frazier's demise. However, I can't think of a time in recent memory where someone got away with it so blatantly without warning. Foreman was finally warned in Round 2 but the damage was already done.
In prizefighting, a referee should do everything he can to let the fighters decide the outcome, and this used to be the standard. Probably explains it. Marciano, Tyson, Holyfield, Ali, etc. got away with absolute murder in some of their fights. Part of the game. I look at it this way. Every time George shoves, he does it with both hands. Every target on his body is wide open. Frazier could have punched, allowed himself to be corralled. His own fault, Alex Stewart used the shoves for free shots.
Fact is that in that era these refs let guys get away with most everything. Hell, Ali was a flagrant holder and pulled guys' heads down like crazy, but got away with it.
We call that manhandling. It sounds more macho and badass As Teddy Atlas says, "Those thug tricks bring out the yellow in a cowardly fighter." And then he talks about real estate or some other metaphor and screams a lot.
2.37 .... ouch! wow... this is sensational footage! never seen these angles before and foreman's strength and power seems even more brutal!
It was blatant and should have drawn a warning earlier. But it wouldn't have made a lick of difference to the outcome had he not shoved. As someone else has pointed out, nobody was going to beat George by coming to him mano-a-mano. Nobody before Frazier, nor since.
Yes, folks, i am quite aware our greatest champs cheated in the ring. I cheated as a silly golden gloves kid. If you aint cheating, you aint trying... This particular always shocks me a bit, tho... As does Frazier's complete lack of ability to make Foreman pay for having both gloves extended.
It's funny what fighters notice, because Alex Stewart KILLED Foreman for trying to shove in their fight. Just ripped him up.
