Foreman's punches were definitely slower by that point in George's career. He threw 'em right, of course, but they weren't coming with quite as much snap as they did in Kingston. The new angle illustrates that the punches that came after the shove were pretty quick (at least a hell of a lot quicker than I-and probably Joe- expected them to be). Also, Stewart tended to stand off a bit, as opposed to Joe, who relied more on forward momentum. The shove caused Joe to reset, and gave George a better window of opportunity to follow up.
People talk the greats fighting dirty but everyone fights dirty. Tyson hit with elbows all the time and then complains when Holyfield headbutts him! LOL! Hopkins headbutts,Lennox and Wladmir clinch etc
Testament to Foreman's chin and will to win. Stewart had like a 90% KO ratio and he pounded Foreman's face with combos.
Ref let if go way too far, that is what made Foreman look even more powerful. If Mercante had stopped it when he should have, after 2nd knockdown, Foreman would not have seemed as scary.
Alex Stewart was a bit of a headcase, ask anybody who knew him. He'd paralyze himself with confidence issues, he kept irregular training habits, wouldn't sleep. At his best, though, he was a damn fine fighter. Border-line elite, with skills, heavy hands, and speed. He lost the big tests in his career because he buckled under the occasion, not because his skillset was deficient. It's an underrated win by George, in my book. How and that blistering right hand George nails Joe with as Joe is trying to run away? From this angle, we see how hard it landed. 2:36 of the video. What a shot.
What makes me laugh,is that George is always saying that he was scared to death of Joe Frazier that night. He sure did n't LOOK scared
Wlad with his constant holding against the majority of his opponents. It was notoriously bad against Mormeck and didn't even get warned! I know it isn't pushing, but a foul is a foul and it's near enough the same concept. Edit: just seen your later post which makes this kind of irrelavent
George said years later, that he didn't want Joe to look down during the instructions because his knees were trembling but I think he was being generous to Joe I still reckon before the last KD Joe's left leg went dead. He was a sitting duck on those ropes and couldn't get out of there
Damn seeing this again almost forgot how beastly Foreman was, also shocked at Frazier at the start of the second he really came for Foreman and landed quite a few good shots. Also the right at 2:36 always looked like a grazing rabbit punch from the standard angle, here it clearly lands square on Frazier's jaw and looks as tho it knocked his jaw about 6 inches out of place.
I am in awe of George Foreman as a physical specimen. He is just so strong overall. He can beat so many better technicians because of him imposing his strength.
Totally. They all push the rules. It's up to the ref to set the boundaries of what is permissible. Same in basketball, football and baseball. You only ask that your officials be consistent.
