They didn't turn down a title fight with Joshua. Whyte did. People can stomp their feet and say they are more deserving than so-and-so, but if a champ offers you a title fight and you say no. And he offers another guy a title shot and he says yes, at some point not fighting for a title (or THREE) becomes your own fault.
Haha suit yourself, but it's actually a primary source. I linked to the radio program of Mauricio Sulaimán struggling to answer some difficult questions about the situation with Wilder v Fury 3 and WBC mandatories. But yeah, sorry state of affairs when Talk Sport is now flying the flag for actual journalism in boxing.
Not a story or even an excuse it's why he chose not to take the Joshua fight. I think he allowed greed to overcome ambition, which obviously isn't a stance I can agree with. He would of still made by far his biggest purse vs Joshua but chose not to risk it when he was making easy money vs Rivas and Wach, so as you say you can't feel that bad for him for not getting a title shot because he did have a chance but simply said no. Though I don't think he could of fought for all the belts, only Joshua's. Fact is while he was offered Breazeale that eliminator was scrapped so he didn't even get a chance to say yes or no to that. The eliminator vs Ortiz he rightly refused because it wasn't for a mandatory spot but for a made up 2nd mandatory spot which even in the WBC's own rules is something that doesn't exist and even if he had taken that and won and even if the WBC actually agreed he would be bumped up to first mandatory fact is the Fury/Wilder debacle would have ensured he wouldn't of gotten a mandatory title shot yet and with Fury after beating Wilder will likely sign a 2 fight deal with Joshua, we shouldn't expect a WBC mandatory title shot until 2023 some 4 years after the previous WBC mandatory. He of course lost to Povetkin but even if he had won this wasn't a final eliminator. The WBC wanted Whyte vs Wilder as a final eliminator for the WBC title after he beat Povetkin in the rematch. https://www.boxingnews24.com/2021/0...wilder-vs-dillian-whyte-for-final-eliminator/ Fact is the WBC have been moving the goal posts. First fight Ortiz not for mandatory but 2nd mandatory, then fight Breazeale but no wait scrap that Breazeale is fighting Wilder now, so fight Rivas for interim but that won't get you mandatory if you win, fight Povetkin now in an eliminator, no wait that's not a final eliminator fight Wilder now. Only belt Whyte wants I believe is the WBC because he wants to be the one to fight Joshua for undisputed as that's the best chance for him to make the biggest purse, this is why he's so vehemently trying to get a WBC mandatory title shot.
I'm not stomping my feet and I don't know what went on behind the scenes I just think Whytes a more worthy contender than those guys
I couldn't stand him, but i also miss him lol. I see he briefly came back for a snoop in April but nothing since
He's the mandatory now, but the period in which it'll be enforced is reset to a year from the day he beat Povetkin.
No, no. Go read the WBC´s own rules. The interim belt means nothing in reality. The WBC basically state that they have no obligations to it. Holding it does not guarantee you a title shot/unification. But if you go to court with it, a judge might take a look at just how ridiculous it is. And under actual questioning, the whole thing would fall apart. That might help Whyte´s case. And from my memory, Whyte was the supposed mandatory challenger for the WBC belt before Povetkin gave us all a gift. So now that Whyte has won that rematch and re-gained the interim belt, it makes the WBC look even worse. I am not defending Whyte here. According to my knowledge, he has turned down some fights and I don´t see how he deserves a title shot. But going by the WBC´s bull**** rulings and the "reasons" they have given, I fully support Whyte here. The WBC give vague reasons for their rulings which usually make no freaking sense. Whyte has been their NR 1 contender for years and years now. He was and once again is their Interim champion. So why exactly has he not gotten a mandatory shot? And no, the WBC never publicly stated that Whyte had turned down some final eliminator. So in court, Whyte has a good case and I am rooting for him.
Actually he is not which probably why Whyte is taking them to court. Earlier this month Sulaiman said Whyte wasn't the mandatory for the winner of Fury/Wilder 3 and the situation would be clarified after Fury/Wilder 3. They also previously said they wanted Whyte to fight Wilder in a final eliminator when Fury was set to fight Joshua, so we can pretty much guarantee the WBC will want Whyte to fight a final eliminator at the very least before he gets a shot.
I've tried to explain this. Dillian Whyte - and some fans - seem to think being rated number one and being the "mandatory" contender are one in the same. They are not. They rate contenders 1 thru 10 and then they ALSO pick a "mandatory" who the champ has to fight. They always have. But Whyte became the #1 contender and then seemed to think his work was done, even though the WBC kept telling him he needed to engage in final eliminators. Then Whyte and Hearn started this "branding" crap counting the days Whyte was the #1 contender and then adding "mandatory" in there, when he was not the mandatory. They are TWO different things. They always have been different. They are in the boxing business. They all KNOW they are two different things. But Hearn knows some fans will just eat it up. And they did. (Hell, that's why the IBF quit listing #1 contenders. Because people can't grasp the notion that #1 doesn't mean mandatory unless you are "named" the mandatory or you win an eliminator.) At some point for Whyte, in 2018 or 2019, it just became about marketing himself as the guy who was "cheated." The only guy who got screwed, IMO, by the WBC in this whole situation was Alexander Povetkin. The WBC has offered Whyte THREE final eliminators in three successive years (2018, 2019, 2020) ... and Joshua offered Whyte a title shot ... the WBC gave Whyte an interim title fight against Rivas (who was rated like #9) so Whyte could be named WBC champ at a moment's notice. They let Whyte have a non-title fight with the unrated WACH after that, which should never have been allowed. They appear to be allowing him to fight Franklin next, another unrated guy. And the only "eliminator" offer Whyte accepted was the third offer in 2020 against Povetkin. And the WBC said if Whyte won he'd be the mandatory. But if Povetkin won, he wouldn't. And the WBC also allowed Whyte to demand a rematch clause if he lost. And Whyte GOT KNOCKED COLD. IF you are Povetkin, how do you engage in a final eliminator against a "interim" champion and WIN ... and the reward is basically ... well, forget that, let's do this over? Whyte fans seem to think he's been cheated for years. Everyone else looks at it as Whyte sure as hell keeps benefitting from this high rating. Usually, if you turn down a final eliminator, the org doesn't keep coming back year after year and offering you another one ... give you an interim belt for fighting a nobody ... and then make it so only you (not your opponent) can become the mandatory in a final eliminator ... even if you lose. That's what's been going on here. Like one poster said yesterday, why should Whyte take a fight for THREE WORLD TITLES against Joshua and risk the good thing he's got going? I hope a court does rule that the Whyte has to fight the winner of Fury-Wilder ... because then we'll finally be done with this nonsense. Although, given Whyte's track record, the judge will rule in his favor, and he'll turn down the fight because it's not enough money.
That's because Sulaiman wants to leave the window open for Fury-Joshua, which everyone wanted, next. So, I hope Whyte wins. Then everyone can go off on Dillian when the judge rules Whyte gets preference over a unification with Joshua. And Whyte fans can say, well, he beat Wach and Franklin and Chisora. Yes, he got wasted by Povetkin. But that didn't count. They had a "do over." He beat Helenius five years ago. What do you want? He's been "Cheated."
When he was offered to fight Ortiz in April 2018 it wasn't a final eliminator but for the 2nd Mandatory position as Breazeale was the Mandatory. So all it would of given him in the title of "2nd mandatory" which lets be honest is meaningless. When Whyte was offered to fight Breazeale in 2019 it again wasn't a final eliminator it was for the Interim title which of course as you have said yourself doesn't guarantee a mandatory title shot. But Breazeale was then made the mandatory after Fury signed with ESPN instead of fighting Wilder in a rematch and Whyte challenged the WBC ruling because he was ranked higher than Breazeale. Whyte Povetkin in 2020 wasn't a final eliminator, just an eliminator, there's a difference. After Whyte beat Povetkin in the rematch the WBC said they wanted a final eliminator between Whyte and Wilder but they never mandated it and then Wilder won his arbitration. So he's been offered an eliminator for 2nd mandatory, an interim title shot and a first eliminator but technically never a final eliminator.
* Long story short, they offered Whyte an eliminator. He turned it down. * They offered Whyte an interim title fight but he hemmed and hawed and complained, so they made Breazeale the mandatory. * They offered Whyte another interim fight IMMEDIATELY against the #9 rated guy, he took it, got floored, failed his drug test, appealed. * Whyte was offered a fight for three world titles and declined. * They let Whyte have a non-title interim fight against Wach, which he barely got by. * They offered Whyte another eliminator, and said only he would be named mandatory and if he lost he could have a do over. Whyte lost. Got a do over against a guy recovering from Covid. Won. * Now Whyte is interim champ again. He can be named WBC champ without fighting anyone the moment Fury goes off the rails and decides to dump the belt. * They are letting him sign to fight another unrated guy, in likely another non-interim fight. And Whyte is going to court because he's been "so cheated." Does that sum up the last three years? Sorry, this guy has gotten more opportunities than anyone. He just turned down the majority of them, and has either lost or just got by when he actually accepted some. At this point, his whole gimmick is the guy who got cheated. Again, I hope he wins in court. I hope a unification for all the belts is further delayed so people can argue how deserving he "actually" is. So we can be done with this.
This isn't a case of Liston is the best heavyweight and weaker fighters are shutting him out of the title picture. Nobody seems to be arguing Whyte can beat all the guys at the top. Nobody seems to be arguing Whyte was right in turning down a fight for three titles. They just want to argue whether he was "cheated" or not. Because that's all Whyte is about. They bought his brand. And when he does fight for the title or titles and gets destroyed, his brand is finished. Which is why I hope the court rules in his favor.
