Dillian Whyte Record Amateur: 6 fights winning 5 by knockout and beat Antony Joshua on his debut, dropping him in the process. Pro: 7(4)-0 So far has been fed a strictly East European diet along with the guy on every CW/HW's record Hastings Rasani. He has won all of them with relative ease. Upcoming fights Mike Holden is next up. British champion 12 years ago and without a win since 2002. He has seemingly been picked to get a "former British champion" on his record. Scheduled to fight on the Price/Audley undercard. Team He is managed by Chris Okoh (former Commonwealth CW champ) and promoted by Frank Maloney. Other Former British Kickboxing Champ. Has fought in MMA. Has sparred with David Price, David Haye, Wlad Klitsckho and Derek Chisora. He has such a limited amateur record because of a dispute with the ABA over his kickboxing background. Judging by interviews and twitter he seems to have a brilliant attitude; focused, determined and grounded. Last fight [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBRemXBdeDQ[/ame] So then: How far will he go? How do you think he'll be managed/promoted? Does anyone know anything more about him? This could be interesting to come back to in a few years.
He is a very interesting character and if he fights bigger names and gets his name out there he could be a very popular fighter. He seems eager to learn and willing to spar anybody as you can see and I believe he is currently sparring Vitali Klitschko too. The one thing he seems to lack is a proper gameplan he doesn't throw combinations or pepper them with a jab, he just tries to gun sling them out of there and if he can't he wins on points because the opposition isn't throwing much back. If he gets a game plan uses his jab and puts his shots together he could do well.
Will be fighting John Mcdermott by Xmas aswell. Currently in the Klitschko camp Sparred Fury a lot recently, also Haye Chisora and Price Very promising career ahead.
British at best, sorry just aint buying into the hype...if he wasnt an heavyweight no one would be talking about him. (hope im proved wrong)...also he doesnt look that 'big' for an heavyweight...small, bulky, heavyweights just cant cope with the taller, long jab heavyweights like price, fury, klitskho's, etc.The game is changing
I think someone like that could really frustrate him, the answer is none of us know, he has hardly any boxing pedigree and we don't know how he will adapt to the differing styles and road blocks he may face including questions about how far he's willing to go to succeed.
Seems like a good guy, he is progressing well & showing clear signs of improvement. Its still early days but he has a good team around him & works hard, I dont think he has world-beater potential but it will be an entertaining journey. I'm not sure he's fast enough to handle a big, tall HW with an educated jab but if Dillian's chin holds up, then he should win a British title at the very least.
What do you guys make of the Joshua win? I think we'll be hearing a lot of this win in the coming 18/24 months. If I was his manager I'd be mentioning it every interview a la Groves and Degale
I asked him about it on twitter and he played it down saying Joshua was younger then and not as good as he is now, but i didn't know it was dillians first amateur bout
Talented kid. Can certainly win some titles with the right guidance. Unfortunately Frank Maloney is the type of guy to take you no steps forward and probably two or three back for the most part.
If this were the Williams /skeleton /sprott /Harrison days I might be able to get excited about him but it's not, so I find it hard to. He might reach Sam setting level though
****ing auto correct. I meant Sam sexton ie Commonwealth, in some fun fights but just below world contender
He has three fights before the end of the year including John McDermott for the English title in December. I think he will win all these fights and in 2013 we will be talking alot more about him.
