Yes, he will deserve a certain amount of credit if he fights Rivas. Rivas is prime, has a nice punch, and a good amature pedigree. Now, if Whyte ends up "winning" this fight by one point due a low blow induced knockdown early in the fight and a UK referee who finesses a dazed Whyte to his feet after a "slip" in the 12th round, and allows him to hug his way to the final bell, I'll rescind that credit.
Both of these guys deserve a lot of credit. They could’ve been like Breazeale, Miller, or even Ortiz as of recent and fought well known names who pose no real threat to get their rankings up while acting like they deserve a title shot, but instead they’ve targeted contenders who’ve only lost at the top level or are undefeated. Fights like this are the lifeblood the division’s missing. The biggest problem may be with the top guys and who they’re fighting, but a close second are the guys right below them who refuse to fight opponents of their tier. No fighter should get a title shot with out beating another top 10 HW imo. Ortiz, Pulev, Povetkin, Kownacki, Breazeale, Parker, Ruiz, Hunter, should be fighting one another on a consistent basis.
