Dimitrenko - Povetkin

I think this is a great fight for the heavyweight division. Two young undefeated contenders who have fought a decently high level of opposition, Povetkin has the edge there but Dimitrenko's resume isn't shabby. The winner would have to be considered the number one contender to Wladimir.

Based off of their opposition, physical talent, and skill set I would favor Povetkin. He has edges in speed, stamina, mobility and is the more skilled fighter. Dimitrenko might have more one punch power, but Povetkin hits pretty damn hard. I'd go with Povetkin via mid round TKO.

 

This is a great fight, and exactly the sort of fight that the Heavyweight division needs. Chambers vs Peter, Dimitrenko vs Povetkin... these are the kinds of fights that get the contenders really noticed and then makes for exciting title defenses.

 

This is an excellent fight from the perspective of styles and ability. Both guys are at similar experience levels. The bout also makes sense in terms of career development; the winner will be that much better seasoned, and he will be that much better prepared to meet either Klitschko. As things stand now, I don't think Povetkin or Dmitrienko are experienced enough to hold their own with the Klitschkos.

I'm certain that Povetkin will beat Dmitrienko in a competitive, exciting fight. My guess is that Povetkin beats Dmitrienko down over the long term and wins by stoppage in the later rounds.

You know I love that while the fans of Klitschko, Haye and Arreola all go back and forth with each other about their fighter this and their fighter that, it is Povetkin and Dimitrenko who are willing to fight the two proven top contenders in each other.

All credit to Klitschko, he has fought a long list of top heavies, but neither Haye or Arreola fit that bill now. Povetkin has defeated Donald, Byrd and Chambers. Dimitrenko has defeated Hoffmann and Krasniqi. Whoever wins has got to be the consensus number one challenger and seriously forces Wladimir's hand.

 

Povetkin pulled out of his scheduled fight with Wlad. I don't know what all this "forcing Wlad's hand" is about.

 

Yes I know that, but Wladimir has seemed less than enthused about fighting Povetkin.

It forces Wlad's hand because both men fight in his biggest market. They are from his home region, and draw directly from the core of his fan base. By fighting each other it creates a lot of buzz in Germany and Eastern Europe, draws big ratings, and positions the winner as the clear cut man for Wlad to fight.

 

I agree about the fight being good, especially for creating a buzz. However, Wlad was more than happy to fight against Povetkin, as it was Povetkin who pulled out. Wlad also plans on fighting Povetkin this year anyways regardless of whether or not Povetkin fights Dimitrenko. Povetkin's team made it rather clear that they weren't ready yet for Wlad at the turn of the New Year when they said that they were going to take it slow and not rush back into anything. Trust me... Wlad isn't afraid of fighting Povetkin.

On a side note... I think that Povetkin absolutely destroyes David Haye.

Povetkin got injured, of course they weren't going to fight Wladimir first fight post injury and Wladimir gave himself a bit of a breather by fighting Rahman which pushed back the Povetkin defense to September of this year. Wladimir had to fight Povetkin and Dimitrenko at some point as both are his mandatories, assuming he beat either one to fight the next.

But look at the interview Wlad gave and how dismissive he was of Povetkin, talking about him not even being on his radar and talking about Arreola and Haye, both fighters who cannot draw flies compared to Povetkin and Dimitrenko.
