I opened a thread on the subject of ringsize that related to JMM vs Juan Diaz......

I noticed early on in tha JMM-Diaz card that the ringsize was as small as it could get.....Chris John who's a slippery running type, had a hell of a time moving away from "the lead footed" Rocky Juarez....in a fight that the favorite John got a draw out of.

I had picked JMM to easliy take apart Juan Diaz, but once I saw the ringsize, and knowing why it was there (there were fighting in Diaz and Juarez' hometown) then I figured the fight for JMM would be a little more competitive than I initially envisioned it.

......lets get real here, a really small ring against an ultimate skilled swarmer like Diaz????

There's no where to hide in a small ring, so considering the circumstances, I thought JMM played it exellent by going to the ropes and picking Juan Diaz apart from there.....
.....the fact that JMM was able to sit on those ropes find the creeces to rip Diaz with more accurate and harder shots than were falling on him, goes to show just how good he is at adapting to situations.......
There were alot of posters in this forum who were questioning that JMM may not be able to deal with an active swarming type like Diaz.....that Diaz would make JMM expend to much energy......

JMM passed that test with flying colors!

The point is that I dont agree that it took JMM long to adapt and get his rhythm......he was ripping Juan Diaz with countershots from the get go.....and while Jim Lampley and Emmanuel Steward noted that Diaz was forcing JMM to fight Diaz' fight, I'm glad there was someone there (Max Kellerman) to note that Marquez was actually landing cleaner and with more thud on his shots.

Ringsize my friend played a big role on how the fight developed......you can see the difference between JMM and Chris John, and there ability to adapt to ring elements.........
John did'nt quite do as good a job against the lesser Juarez, than JMM did against Juan Diaz.

Valero needs about three good fights before he is worthy of getting in the ring with Marquez and even then Marquez will eat him alive...

I didn't notice the ring size but YES...HUGE factor. My reaction was a surprised one just b/c I had envisioned Juan's swarming style to be tailor made for JMM accurate and sharp Counter punching.

You're correct stating that JMM was landing the cleaner more effective punches from the very begining....what had me scratching my head was how much leather Juan was landing on JMM. Usually JMM doesn't get hit that often and that clean. Juan Diaz isn't a BIG puncher but he is a well rounded fighter....just not on JMM level. I'm glad you let me in on the size of the ring b/c I wasn't even taking that into consideration. Just to make it clear....I was NEVER ONCE concerned for JMM in that fight. I knew the end would come for Juan eventually and it did. I was just surprised how well Juan was able to do.

When you have a ring as small as it was that night, a fighter cant lateral at as wide an angle as he'd like......he takes a couple of steps to either side, and he's already hitting the ropes.....

......so considering the ring elements, I thought JMM played it just right, by sitting for brief moments at the ropes and turning Diaz once Marquez had landed cleaner counters.....
Marquez had to keep doing this until he could see Juan Diaz discouraged......

.....Diaz never got discouraged however, God bless him, he came to fight.
.....but you saw that Marquez' investment in body punishment early on and throughout the fight paid off for him, as Diaz slowly but surely began to slow down as the fight wore.

As a sidenote, during the fight I kept thinking to myself things like, "How would Ray Leonard have done in that same ring against Marvin Hagler?"

Being respectful, but not being a true fan of SRL, you know I was salivating at the mere prospect that that would have happened!
.....the reason that Leonard-Hagler crossed my mind during the JMM-Diaz fight was because Leonard did exactly the opposite of what the people in Texas did for Juan Diaz.....Leonard made sure that the ringsize for his fight with Hagler was as big as boxing would allow.

Now think about JMM fighting Juan Diaz in the ring that Leonard fought Hagler in.......
Surely it would'nt have come close to the excitement generated in a small ring, but we would have had JMM getting hit much less and dominate Juan Diaz from start to finish.
