Anyone else get shoulder pain when doing these? When i do tricep dips (keeping as upright as possible) i get a pain along my collarbone. Its annoying the hell out of me because they are a great exercise. Any suggestions, i.e an alternative way to do them?

I think similar tricep exercises will produce similar pain around your collarbone. Are you sure you're looking for the right solution? Wouldn't letting your shoulder (or whatever your problem is, probably ligament or muscle related) heal be a better plan?

You could try push ups with your hands really close together. That gets the triceps pretty good.

its weird, its only the one exercise that does it... but i have done a fair bit of research just now and alot of people complain of shoulder pain when doing dips so i will give it a miss. I have had operations on both shoulders so i have to be careful

If you're doing it too often, yeah it's trouble. Bodyweight Diamond Pushups and the Barbell French Press are two good alternatives. Dips aren't really sport specific for boxing... not that too many exercises are anyway... but there's no need to do them more than once a week as long as your doing them hard, right, and not to failure. I do think dips are a great exercise though, I'm not saying to stop them.

Does this pain kind of feel like the muscle or tendon might tear away from your collarbone?

I used to get something similar to that.

Or you could try bench dips for your triceps

About 50% of the people in the world who have done dip have this pain.
    I have it to.
Find a diff exercise, will save yourself the trouble.

Non weight, diamond push ups with emphasis on flaring elbows outwards and only going down around halfway for triceps. You go down further and it starts to take emphasis off of triceps.

I like going on a smith machine with a decline bench with some heavier weight for my triceps. 6 inch separation between hands, and I only come down 1/3 of the way.

yeah thats exactly right.... a little bit tender today but i can tell i got out before i did any serious damage - just wont do them in the future

thanks for all the advice guys. diamond push ups are working a treat. Although i found that i gotta keep my feet wider than shoulder width - not sure why. I dont go too far down because it starts to involve your inner chest.

You can try the assisted Dip machine if you have access to one.

I used to have some pain in my elbows when doing dips. I was able to do maybe 5 or so unassisted dips but I didnt like the pressure I felt in my elbows.

I have been doing the assisted Dips now with 60 pounds off my 190 pounds weight. Its less force so thats less for your muscles but also less pressure on the elbows.

I am going to try going back to normal dips in a bit and see if my elbows hurt anymore when I do them

i tried the dip machine but the feeling wasnt strict enough, it felt as if the weight was being helped along by about 3 other body parts. Im just trying to do body weight stuff now because i have also had issues with my elbows, bursitis is a ****
