This content is protected By Scott Gilfoid: Top Super Six tournament contender Andre Ward (20-0, 13 KO’s) chimed on one his own personal view about the Carl Froch vs. Andre Dirrell fight which took place last Saturday night in Froch’s home city of Nottingham, saying “I felt like Dirrell definitely won the fight and I felt like he deserved the nod. This fight is definitely going to take Dirrell to another level because he knows he can compete at the highest level. I definitely feel like I’m back in Greece all over again and even though the Americans fought well, unfortunately we were unable to get a victory in the first two fights. I’m definitely inspired to bring America their first victory in the Super Six tournament.’’ Much thanks for your expert views, Mr. Ward. I’m also in agreement with you about the outcome of the Froch-Dirrell fight. It looks like some bad scoring was done and Dirrell missed what looked like a certain victory. The good thing is Dirrell still remains alive in the tournament despite experiencing the controversial defeat to Froch. It seems as if many British boxing fans felt that Froch won the fight, whereas many fans from the rest of the world see Dirrell as the winner. I wonder why we have these two opposing viewpoints about the same fight. Could it be that the British fans have a certain bias and are unable to see past it? Who knows? But whatever the case, Dirrell came out of the Super Six fight smelling like a rose despite the loss. The reason for this is simple. Dirrell looked awesome in the fight, showing brilliant hand speed, excellent combinations, good power and great defense. While watching the fight, it was if I was seeing a replay of some old video of one of Roy Jones Jr’s fights from the early part of his career. Dirrell looked that good. He also reminded me a little of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Muhammad Ali. He showed aspects of all three in his fine performance against Froch. The fight was difficult because it evolved from a basic boxing match early on to one in which Dirrell was fouled repeatedly in every round. The referee stood helplessly by as Froch landed rabbit punches and an assortment of other fouls. Dirrell didn’t look at all comfortable with the fouling and began to clinch to try and slow Froch down. It didn’t work, as Froch continued to land rabbit shots in the clinch and it really marred the fight. We’ll never know how the bout would have ended up had Froch played it clean and not fouled at all. At the time the fouling was started by Froch, he was having problems landing his shots and was missing a great deal with his punches. The fouling didn’t improve his accuracy, because he continued to miss with his non-fouling punches. Ward will be facing Mikkel Kessler on November 21st next month in a bout in Oakland, California. Ward will be attempting to take Kessler’s WBA super middleweight crown and give the U.S. their first win in the Showtime Super Six tournament. Ward has an excellent chance of winning, because he has the speed, youth and home city advantage over Kessler.
They seem to be friends. Let's see what happens when they'll have to fight to stay in the tournament though. Could be a S/D again.
unfortunately, ward won't have that same type of who-won discussion revolving around him cause kessler is gonna to khtfo. :nut
Allan Green - "Anybody who thought Dirrell won the fight should have their eyes checked" "I Like Andre, He's my boy"
thanks for posting.. can't argue with that really.. I'm of the opinion Dirrell should of and could of done more.. Unfortunately he didn't.. He can only learn from it.. I had it to him 114-113.. but I think it depends on what your looking for and I can see how some judges could have given rounds to Froch..
Dirrell was quick and surely won the fight, but even in the commentary I heard his speed compared to Roy Jones.... He does NOT have Roy Jones-type speed. I've never seen anyone who could muster that sort of speed.
I agree that it's probably off base to compare Dirrell's speed with Jones'. However, Dirrell is incredibly fast himself and clearly in the P4P discussion for fasted hands and feet (as the jokes and Photoshop renditions have plainly indicated). Part of the reason that I'm so annoyed he lost to Froch is because his next bout is against Abraham, who very well could win this whole thing. If he got the decision he deserve here and was able to beat Ward in the last fight, he would have a good chance of making the semi-finals. Now I worry he'll be cut along with Taylor or Froch.
