If we look at Darryl Cunningham's last 8 opponents - and each ones last 6 fights..

None of them have won more than ONE fight out of those 6!

Looking at his entire record it is the most horrible resume imaginable!!!!! How can Dirrell come back against crappy-di-crap like this?

Dirrell's supremely talented physically, but weak mentally. I think it's a good idea to put him in against some mediocre opposition, let him shake off the ring rust, and get a couple of confidence boosting wins before facing high calibre opposition. Besides, the guys 24-2, he's not exactly a tomato can, he knows his way around the ring.

he is a lefty,my guess is he hope Bute vs Froch don't happen and he will be next in line for Bute.He wants to be prepared..just in case the phone rings and the big pay check from Canada is delivered.Mark my words,he will ask Bute for a fight in Montreal...if he lose he can blaim it on corrupt referees, judges, whatever and still get a juicy pay check.Win win situation,no harm in being prepared....

He's been out the game for a relatively long period with a brain injury ffs . what do you expect him to come back against?

Cunningham is way better than Taylor's opponent Nicklow. This whole card is crap, just show case fights for a couple of veteran fighters making a come back, they might as well have teamed up coverage with Kessler-Steglitz and Abraham's fight, overall a bunch of stay busy fights. Considering UFC has a major card going on, Showtime shouldn't be expecting much for ratings.

It's his comeback fight! He might have ring rust just like Taylor!

I agree, but it also means that right now and before he showed otherwise, he is not a top dog or even a top 10. When he win this and after a better fight, let's put him against Andrade for example, then we can see if he is back on track.

Cunningham wouldn't have been a much better stay busy for Pavlik either really.

I still don't believe Dirrell was ever really injured. If you had a serious neurological issue and claim a brain injury, you should probably stop fighting. The whole thing seemed shifty.

if he wanted to just get out of the tournament then a back or neck injury would have been a much easier route...brain injuries in boxing from one of the hardest punchers P4P today, i see very little to gain from that story

We're not asking for a top 3 opponent but come on...

Kessler's comeback fight was against Bouadla who was ranked 16 in the world at the time and no 3 on WBOs rankings. This was after a career threatening injury which still today is no completely healed (and may never be).

Vitaly's comeback fight was against the reigning World Champion Sam Peter! This was not a young guy coming back but Vitaly was in his late 30ties! And it was not after 2 years, but 4!

Maybe its me... maybe I am overestimating Dirrell by comparing him to elite fighters and their comeback fights. I am a fan of Dirrell and expect a lot, but I guess if I thought less of him I would be satisfied with such a rickshaw driver for opponent...

I fail to see a big difference between Bouadla and Cunningham.

According to boxrec, Bouadla's best win was against Francisco Antonio Mora.
