Dirtiest player in the game?

I tend to break dirty fighters down into cute dirty fighters and crude dirty fighters.

The latter do it openly up to the extent that they can get away with it, while the former employ smoke and mirrors.

 

Fullmer and Conteh the best at subtle use of the head imo.Holyfield an unskilled, obvous practioner by comparison

McCallum loved his sneaky low blows.

Chang was extremely dirty and may have been penalised for it more outside Korea.Fenech similar.

Herol Graham was a very dirty fighter who doesn't often seem to get tagged as such.Not dirty with his fists or head really, but often manipulating the other fighters balance with illegal spinning,tying an arm up to pull you forward, or even outright judo throws and shoulder tosses.

But good ol' Andrew Golota was pretty ****ing dirty, biting at least once, and the famous low blows.

 

Yes , Golota had difficulty in differentiating between Queensbury rules and a dockside brawl! Poor old Bowe must still have nightmares, and I''m still unsure following his unfortunate encounters with Golota if he did indeed sire anymore children.

Duran definitely evil in the ring, he used everything. Holyfield with his head.

This is the only category in which Harry Greb is vastly overrated. He had a grand total of ONE disqualification loss in his 299 bout career and even that one was questionable (Kid Norfolk should have been DQ'd, not Greb). On the other hand, check out the DQ numbers of his contemps like Norfolk, Chuck Wiggins, Capt. Bob Roper, etc. Greb didn't have even half as many DQ losses in spite of having many more fights than all of them.

If he wasn't even the dirtiest fighter of HIS time, how can he be the dirtiest (or even among the dirtiest) of ALL time? But don't take my word for it, take Tommy Loughran's:

"I wouldn't say Greb was dirty so much as he was expedient. He was so eager to get the damage done that his head and shoulders went with a punch. He was a fast and furious man.

Chuck Wiggins was a real dirty fighter, a reckless character. He didn't care what he did. We fought in Providence and he bit me, butted, punched low. He turned my cup inside out."

 

My own pick would be Mysterious Billy Smith (11 DQ losses in less than 100 fights!), who once bit Joe Walcott on top of his head, kicked and bit Al Neil...just a very dirty fighter overall. Zivic and Saddler rank highly as well. I heard Sandy was the master. You could go into a clinch with him and come out looking like you just lost a knife fight. He was subtle and clever in his fouling.

 

Then again Fritzie Zivic was never DQ'd, even though he boasted of his ability to foul opponents in various ways.

Saddler knew how to work a cut better than anybody. In a newspaper article it was said that out of his 100+ stoppages, the great majority of them were likely cut-related. An exaggeration, probably, but in a fight against Saddler you better have been prepared for blood.
