BUMP. Reading an old Ring magazine, and wanted to start thread, figured I be the one to put Billy out. But I'm late by oh 10 years. 1994 issue- Quote from Billy, "I figure the ring was a place to fight, not take dancing lessons." Veteran boxing writer George Tickell claim- He fought twice with a broken arm and went the distance. Lost ten fights due to fouls, a few that had to be stopped by local police. 85 fights from 1891-1911, some foes were even HW. {{{BOXREC doesn't show that many fights}}} Wikipedia says this about him: He often displayed a blatant disregard for the rules, resorting to a variety of foul tactics including but not limited to elbows, butts, knees and sometimes even biting. Smith was notorious for having a very roughhouse fighting style in the ring and was disqualified 13 times, more than any other boxer in history. His tactics earned him the label as “The Dirtiest Fighter Who Ever Lived.”
Tough to find much of this on the internet, not sure why, BUT My trusty old Ring magazine pre-DLH stated this about the Dirtiest fighter whoever lived: Against then ring great Tommy Ryan, his corner interceded due to Smith multiple bites over 11 rounds worth. Ringside observers called the pair in action, 'wild wolves'. Referee Tim Hurst was dropped due to a haymaker that Ryan missed his foe with. Unable to legally drop Ryan, Billy fell to the canvas trying to trip him. On his way down he bit Ryan on the leg. An inspector Clayton then stopped the bout, forcing Ryan's team to drag him away while kicking and screaming. Even though Smith lost most of the rounds, it was declared a draw. Against Joe Walcott, he bit his head, elbowed him on the neck. After defending his title against Eddie Butler, that same night he caught up with Eddie and whooped his azz (again)-outside the bar. {{{I just boxrec'd this and looks like it was Eddie's debut, wow}}} In Spring Valley Illinois, those who couldn't afford to pay, tried to sneak through a window, where Billy waiting for the opening bout--spotted the gate crashers. He ran to the window and started spanking azz Retired some years later Billy recalled the event laughingly replied "it was a tough night because there were four windows. A head popped in, I'd pop it back out. I couldn't afford to lose money so I battered a bunch of them." By fight time the crowd witnessing him pummel his opponent started throwing any thing they could find in the ring. Billy decided rather than box to get rounds in, he knocked dude out with one shot. The article states Smith was practically chased out of town In retirement he ran a saloon called the Champions Rest. Before he passed in 1937 his last interview revealed that he wasn't famillar with the champs of that era.
Fritzie Zivac is another one I've heard was very dirty. Known to use the tape off his gloves to scrape eyes. When SRR fought him, rather than say he was dirty, Ray said he taught him some things. And I don't consider Golota a dirty fighter. He was a weak minded fighter who resorted to Nut-jabbing Bowe because Bowe wouldn't fall down. Same with Tyson on Holy & Judah rabbit punch/nut-uppercut to Floyd...their weak minds made them to that. Not their normal fight style.
Golota beacuse he is a head case! Holyfield and Hopkins are smart at making it rough when it comes to the game!
SOB WARD and it isn't even close! He headbutts, holds, elbows, wrestles, owns the judges, referee, boxing commission or he will not fight........................Kovalev beat him two times, but SOB's judges saved him the first time, then the referee Tony Weeks called three illegal low blows to the testicles a knockout! This content is protected The boxing commission should review the fight, but they refused according to Kathy Duva! This content is protected This content is protected WHEN DUVA TOLD SOB SHE WANTED NEUTRAL JUDGES, WARD SAID THAT NEUTRAL JUDGES WOULD BE UNFAIR! WHY DID HE SAY THAT?
Ward (roids, nut shots, headbutts) Mayweather (PEDs, elbows, forearms) Hopkins (PEDs, headbutts, elbows) Marquez (roids) Nery (roids) Salido (roids, nut shots)
