Firstly were talking the cream of the crop here (ATG'S), these guys are the best to ever lace em' up. They deserve that status and deserve major props for there great work.

Some fighters had unique styles, ways of throwing punches, some were extremely talented. Scary good! but i'm sure you just sit there and think about one fighter and think 'how the **** does he win?'. He's not great in any area of his skillset, he doesn't do anything special. Doesn't even punch that hard but he just knew how to get wins at the highest level on a consistent basis. He had a knack of winning and adapting like all greats do.

This thread isn't in anyway trying to belittle a fighters achievements, just spark discussion and in a strange way praise the fighter.

I'm sure this thread will make for interesting viewing :good

As Slip says some x's and o's would be nice.

 Nipping in earlier there Wallet, fair call though. I still to this day can't believe he didn't know how to throw a proper jab. He seems more of a tactical fighter then a technical one. I like to think he's spending all this time off prior to the Casamayor fight and after improving his technique.

It'll make for infuriating viewing if someone makes a bold claim that's off the mark

Miguel Canto. He had no pop at all, was not strong, and did not possess a rounded skillset.

But he did what he did extremely well and against all styles of fighter. Massive punchers (Avelar) tough bruisers (Betulio) southpaws (Oguma) to name just three obvious examples.

Canto could move around and pick his spots as well as anyone. He would gauge his opponents advancements, slip, pop, repeat.

He's about as great as you get in the lower weight classes, and considering the era in which he did his work should be a lock for most people's top 100 lists.

It's maddening to think what he achieved when he had little to keep bigger, stronger, harder picking top notch operators in front of him without the benefit of light fly/straw weight.

I say Canto because most will be racking their brains for some straight-on swinger. This guy was ****ing Great.

Nice Post, first man to puts some details down. I'll have to have a look at some Canto. I'm pretty sure i watched some of him a few years back when i was getting into some of the old time fighters.

I would disagree on this one, going by the reports and the number of styles he ran through I would say he demonstrated some very diverse attributes.

 Limited in footage yes :good, It pisses me off there's a clip of him sparring and training but not fighting. His record though proves a lot to me anyways but still a shame we can't see how good he was. Obviously the lads like Flea, El Buja and co read the reports on him and gauge his ability.

Also, you can look at Mickey Walker, Tommy Loughran, Tommy Gibbons and Gene Tunney. Then read about how Greb bamboozled 'em. Gives you an idea of what kinda' calibre of fighter he was, especially when you take into account how regular he fought, how he ranked from Middle to Heavy, the sheer number of quality wins on his ring record and how badly he battered some of these guys.

Easy way of explaining it. Max Schmeling stopped Joe Louis. Schmeling hit hard with the right. Former Welter and Middleweight champ Walker fought Schmeling. He ate the Krauts right hand and charged at him. To anyone not being deliberately biased, that is a good fight, especially considering the size disadvantage Walker is up against.

Greb ****ing battered Walker. Hit him so hard Walker said 'I was on ***** street for a half hour after the fight'.

    Anyway, back to the thread.

Not and ATG, granted - but how Carl Froch ever wins a professional fight is absolutely beyond me.

His timing is poor, footwork poor, sense of range poor, Ryu off street fighter 2 style uppercut - atrocious. But he somehow makes it all work.

Its hard to determine, he was obviously a gret fighter but hard to rank him, must have been pretty good.

Donmt care who you fight, if you are against decent opostion and come out on top majority of the time youre doing something right.

    :rofl

Yeah frustrating, where would you rank gene tunney? pretty techincal boxer who has a few wins over greb.

Lets be honest though, Schmeling messed up Walker by the end of it.

And Walker was one to exaggerate his bout with Greb.
