I dislocated my shoulder about 2 months ago. My physio is not too familiar with boxing and isnt too sure how long i should take off. Im just an average amateur so there is no great loss taking time off, especially cause i had to take 2 weeks off work when it happened. I was wondering if any boxers had experience with dislocated shoulders and would share what they did and the results. Regards Ryan

Does it hurt when you use it? :)

I dislocated mine a few years ago and I boxed with it after a month or so. It did not bother me most of the time, but complete recovery took about a year.

Dont do anything (exercise or stretching ) above shoulder height for six months .Start with high rep exercises daily with a light weight (half a brick maybe) to pump the blood through the
damaged area then over time lower reps higher weight. It needs 12 months for full recovery.

The shoulder is a complicated joint. It depends a lot in which direction you dislodged it. A once dislocated shoulder is likely to happen AGAIN. LIke said in the above, you're off for 6 months. It doesnt mean you have to lay off the whole arm, at least you can stop doing circular motions with it (overhands or high angled hooks since the joint tends to rotate with those motions). Avoid doing any heavy motions which require you to raise your arm above head height.

agree with the others, i dislocated mine 4 times before having surgery, it sounds like this is the first time, this is your best chance at healing it with no further complications, i would say at least 6 months before boxing and definitely no overhead stuff - i dislocated mine before taking up boxing but i would guess any punch other than a jab for now would aggrevate the injury, but if it dislocates again (high chance) i would opt for surgery, it will be easier in the long term

Give yourself lots of time to recover. There is no rush. Only you can know how much time you need. This might be an opportunity to train yourself to be a one armed boxer. Many a fight has been won with just one arm.

I have the same problem mate, i did mine about a year and a half ago and Mr Physio tells me it will never be 100% without an op. It tends to pop out when i throw hooks and its absolute fckin agony. Like Ralph C here said im trying to just use my left to jab and uppercut and leave the hooks out. You should check out the youtube of Danny Williams winning a fight by KO with his dislocated arm hanging out of its socket, its pretty mean

Jab is the punch i feel least easy with, the end of the extension puts a lot of pressure on the mussels that failed. The swing motion of hooks and uppercuts not seem to worry me. When it came out it was sitting at the front bottom side of my shoulder. I have full motion and no pain, almost back even strength with press ups. This was the first time and hope it was the last.
