Distinguished columnist Steve Kim exposes Ring Mag., lineal title

    Over the last few weeks, I have gotten into many disagreements regarding champions in this sport. I have maintained that the Ring champ is overvalued. It's given out by a magazine; a magazine that is meant to report news not serve as a pseudo sanctioning body. I have also maintained that the ABC orgs aren't as bad as people make them out to be and that Casamayor is a bull**** lineal champ. I have taken heat for my opinions. However, I have come across an article from distinguished columnist Steve Kim that sheds light on these issues. Simply go to the scene for boxing and read the article on Chad Dawson's dilemma.

    Here are some excerpts;

    Gary Shaw on Ring Magazine

    "No, I don't recognize 'The Ring'. I recognize the sanctioning bodies that I've been dealing with all these years and 'The Ring' is just another belt,"

    "The only good thing is you don't have to pay for it. But it's just another belt that's awarded by 'The Ring' and if you own the magazine, you could do the same thing. But then they oughta have Casamayor fight Nate Campbell and they could unify. Those fights should be made."

    Mike Criscio on Ring Magazine and Calzaghe

    "I think they're both afraid(Hopkins,Calzaghe) of Chad Dawson"

    "We had a contract to fight Calzaghe in November, a year ago and it was all said and done and good to go and a week later, oh, he doesn't want to fight him."

    "How can you trust 'The Ring' belt, which is owned by the partner of the guy who has the belt?"

    "I mean, that's bull****. He should put it up for grabs. I mean De La Hoya owns the company now and he (Hopkins) is the Ring champion at 175, but the only problem is he hasn't really fought at 175."

    Don't you think people like Gary Shaw have an agenda to pump up the criminal sanctioning bodies? The Ring magazine is not stripping it's champions because they will not fight some bull **** mandatory fight instead of trying to Unify (see the Heavyweight Division). The Ring although NOT perfect is much better than any of the criminal corrupt sanctioning bodies ever were. Of course a promoter is going to say these things his career depends on the criminal alphabet orgs to make money.

    this has nothing to do with Oscar. He did not bring credibility if anything he made it worse.

    But the thing that has stayed consistant with the ring is that you don't have to pay any sanctioning fees, you're not mandated to defend your belt, your never stripped of your title and the only way you can lose it, is in a fight - if you retire or move up in weight.

    That has been consistant with the ring ... no matter who owns it ... thats what seperates the ring championship from the other sanctioning belts.

    The rankings are non bias and most fans look to ring rankings when they rank fighters.

    I recognize it as THE belt because of tradition.

    So far, they have respected the rules of lineage (except in strange cases of vacant titles, like for example Vitali Klitschko in 2004).

    The only LHW Champ to never defend against another LHW.

    Why do you always refer to writers as "distinguished or respected" in a way that is meant to demean their position by using those terms in a condecsending manner.

    The Ring still has 20x the credibility of any ABC belt in my book, there are simply to many titles out there.
