I'm in L.A. for work right now and on the radio, Golden Boy Promotions has an ad for the DLH-Forbes fight. Interesting of note is that the commercial states "10-Time World Champion Oscar De La Hoya" over and over.

This got me to thinking. Is it OK for DLH to claim his early WBO belts at the lower weights and his IBA belts in the upper weights as legitimate world titles?

I mean, the WBO has gained recognition from the boxing media NOW in the last 2-3 years, but DLH won these belts in an era where guys the caliber of Damiani and Morrison held the WBO version of the belts in their division. An era where the WBO once elevated a guy in the rankings...who had a slight roadblock in his career called death.

For the ordinary fan, it doesn't matter and it might sell more tickets. But for the boxing purists, that has to be pretty disrespectful, if not irresponsible.

    Thoughts?

He can claim to be a 100 time World Champ for all I care. History, and historians, know better.

I dont know I guess you gotta count the WBO cause even back then they called him a world Champion from watching his fights back then on DVD so I guess you gotta count them. But lets count em up.

    WBO 130 vs Bredahl
    WBO 135 vs Paez
    IBF 135 vs Ruleas
    WBC 140 vs Chavez
    WBC 147 vs Whitaker
    WBC 154 vs Castillejo
    WBA 154 vs Vargas
    WBO 160 vs Sturm
    WBC 154 vs Mayorga

Thats 9 unless im forgetting something and thats pretty impressive.

I guess it's not a big deal either way, but I just want to know what the fans think in terms of them feeling their intelligence insulted or otherwise.

I'd like to hear both sides of the DLH spectrum, from the haters (ex. Divac) to the superfans (ex. Widdow Maker).

Does something like this help the sport, hurt the sport, or have no relevant effect in the long run? Because to me, that would be like someone coming up to me and saying the Patriots are 4-Time NFL Champs by way of going undefeated in the regular season.

I respect the WBO belt even back then. I know what you mean by Morrison and the Italian, but the HW seemed to not hold water back then. The lighter weights did somehow. HBO tried not to acknowledge Camacho when he held the WBO 140 belt. HBO always threw roadblocks when it came to the WBO, but a majority of fight fans and media excepted the WBO. I don't know about these other belts growing out like weeds: IBO, WBF, IBA, CNN.

I think the 10th is when he won the IBA belt at 154 as a throw-in in the Vargas fight. No doubt it's impressive.

But like I said above, with that argument, then is Ricky Hatton 5-time world champ at 140 for his IBF (twice), WBA, WBU and IBO belts?

HE owns boxing and now owns all sancitiong bodies as well as the ring . he basicly owns boxing

be careful cuz i hear ESB is next and Widdowmaker is just finalizing everything.

DLH can do as he pleases just as long as he makes good fights

Do you count his IBF and WBO titles at 135 as being world champion twice, despite being won during the same reign?

That's like calling Hopkins a 4-time middleweight world champion; and Calzaghe a 4-time Super middleweight world champion.

Whenever a fighter unifies a LEGIT world title, you have to count it as a 2-Time World Champion. He won a world title belt. Therefore he is a champion again.

However, the key word is LEGIT for it to be counted.

WBO is certainly a title to count. Just ask Calzaghe. His entire legacy depends on it.

WBU and IBO arent legitmate belts. Hes a 3 time World Champion but do u make him a 4 time Champion and add the Ring belt. Its all ****ing wack to me.
