That is one perfect thread title. It is the DLH PPV boom, and it's coming to an end when Pac and May retire unless a charismatic supreme talent sparks them out on the big stage. DLH hopes it's Alvarez, Top Rank would love to see Benavidez reaching PPV heights but they might be too young for the job. I'd certainly pick Devon Alexander if he had a much better team around him with a lot of ****ing hype, but I fear he's not gonna get the kind of popularity he seems to deserve.
After Floyd and Pac retire, I think it could be some time before we see another 1 million PPV buy fight/fighter.
I can't say I agree with this dude. For the past 5 years all I've been hearing is how MMA/UFC will take over and kill off boxing. And in this space of time what have we seen? **** hot lower weight divisions developing, giving us memorable fights Ridiculously high PPV numbers Floyd and Manny become genuine top 40 ATG fighters, and making the world crave (including MMA fans!) for them to face one another. A single division (140) which is already offering us at least 3 potential superstars for the near future I think it's safe to say, boxing will continue doing it's thing, and not worry about MMA/UFC harming it's existence.
There's a good chance they'll try to keep hyping Alvarez and if he continues winning, they could put him in against the soon to be retired PBF. A victory here would make him a star.
watching a young floyd and young pacquiao who would have thought they would be the faces of boxing in 2010?
I'm assuming we are talking about PPV in the USA. It seems that especially in Latin America they will continue to thrive. Realistically if David Haye where actually the next Lennox Lewis he could take over. It takes years of quality wins combined with a big persona to draw the average fan's interest. Khan and or Ortiz may have a shot at it but they have some warts. Ortiz comes off as an idiot in interviews and he really needs to step up both in and out of the ring to have a shot.
who knows who the next ppv star will be. i for one never forsaw that one day pacquiao would one day be the cash cow of the sport. certainly not in oscars realm- but he s getting there.
The pessimist in me says Pac and PBF are riding a last wave but I hope I'm wrong. The boxing audience, imo, is much sustained through forums such as this. This **** is keeping boxing alive, but I find boxing sinking more and more into irrelevance with every year when I talk to people , regardless of how well Pac and PBF do. And as others have said they only do so well because they rode the dLh wave. Now is the right time for a great Tysonesque heavyweight to come along. Or better yet, now is the time to bring boxing out of the closed society of 60 dollar ppv events and back into the mainstream.
People where saying the same **** when Oscar retired or was about to retire. Someone will come along, I don't know who but I didn't think it would be Floyd and I didn't think Pac would garner this much attention in the US as a Pinoy.
