I just checked out HBO's Tale of De La Hoya - Trinindad. Here's the link. http://youtube.com/watch?v=Hh4Yh7AukmA&feature=related Here are my questions: 1) Do you think DLH ran the final 3 rounds because he felt he had it in the bag OR do you think he ran because he had nothing left in the tank and didn't want to risk getting KOed by Tito? DLH is notorious for losing steam late. 2) Jerry Roth's score card. Roth gave 3 of the first 4 rounds to Tito. And what's funny is that Roth gave the 12th round to DLH when it was clear he lost that round. Arum accused Roth of fishy things and said that the only reason Roth gave the 12th to DLH was to make the fight closer. Do you think Roth's scoring was fishy?
It was a flat out robbery. There is no serious case that can be made for giving Tito a win in that fight. Especially the people who say... "Oscar deserved to lose because he ran"... as if the only rounds that are scored is the last two. Oscar even boxed Tito's ears off for most of the 10th round as well. Hell... even when Oscar didn't do much of anything in the 11th and 12th, Tito still didn't do anything himself. I think that he avoided exchanges because he had the fight in the bag, and his corner advised him to do so. I am sure that he was a bit tired after putting on such a clinic, but he has been in more heated affairs and thrown MANY more punches down the stretch. All of the scorecards were a joke, Roth's being the biggest joke of them all.
I think it was a case of both. DLH was very weary of Tito;s power and also thought he had it won. That nervousness drained his energy.
i can obviously see how oscar should have gotten the nod BUT there is also a case for a draw because 1st round 5th round and the last 4 founds where oscar ran all go to tito. so a draw is not out the question either.
I did. I said it was a joke. There isn't much else to say about it. He gave Tito rounds that he clearly didn't even come close to winning, and then by the 12th round he realized that his scorecard was completely off the charts and gave Oscar the round even though he didn't do anything, that way his scorecard didn't look so ridiculous. Hell... everyone knows this fight was a robbery, and that is with us knowing that Oscar gave away the 12th round... can you imagine giving Oscar the 12th round and him STILL losing this fight? Amazing.
I really don't know the answer to that. It is a well known fact that Don King had a meeting with the judges before the fight. I think that too much pressure was put on the judges to be "fair" to Trinidad. I think that Oscar's popularity hurt him, because the judges were afraid to give Oscar rounds, thinking that it would make them look bias. Bsically, they would look for any reason, even if there wasn't a one, to give Tito a round. Remember that judges were bashed in the Whitaker and Quartey fights, because some people would say that they were judging Oscar's popularity, rather than his boxing... and that his opponents would have to knock him out to win. I think that all of that negative criticism came to a head in that fight, and they just completely blew it.
I was watching it with two friends that had made a large wager on it - THey were in the process of counting out the money to hand over when they read the scores out - It was the funniest reaction I had ever seen - Good times.
I tend to think the same with the Mayweather fight too. I scored it either 6-6 or 7-5 to Oscar, but I think the judges were thinking "If we rob the best fighter in the world, we're ****ed", and therefore gave the close rounds to Mayweather.
Round 1, 2, and 4 CAN be scored for Tito, although I would've only scored 1 for him. I think it was the 4th. cue Widdow...
