Actually, it turns out Massa isn't headlining this show...

The main event is Alexandra Jiménez vs. Martha Salazar, for the WBC female heavyweight title. :-(

 

Roberto Ortiz vs. Pascual Salgado, 10 rounds @ light welterweight

 

Salgado is coming fresh off really his only semi-credible victory (over Walter Estrada, who used to be an upset specialist but is pushing 40) and has been stopped 4x.

 

The commentators just explained that his nickname is functionally slang for "solid". (Massa being an ingredient in the popular dish tamales, which are dense, most of that heaviness derived from the massa. He is so named because of his thick-bodied frame and the way he punches...)

 

Martha sure is. She is also 46 years old - and was never exactly a twinkle-toed athletic wonder or joy to watch in her prime. She is coming off a 16 month layoff and has fought just twice since her loss to Vonda Ward (yeah, remember HER?) over nine years ago. :!:

 

Round 1

Salgado is bobbing side to side and tossing in a few right hand leads after playing jabbing patty-cake with Ortiz. A few lunge-in jabs score for Ortiz. Salgado takes a swipe at the midsection with a hook and Ortiz backpedals so it just grazes. Right hand by Ortiz.

Round 2

Salgado is performing quick fluid ducks and carving U's in the air to stay beneath Ortiz's jabs and not leave himself available for the follow-up rights if & when they come. Salgado scratching some hooks across Ortiz's midsection, muscled and not so much flabby as stout, but with a bit "extra", as though stuffed into a sausage skin. Ortiz starts out economical on the march, but he stays on the front-foot applying pressure and ends the session dinging Salgado on the brow with reach-up jabs and winging hard rights at him as he scrambles to get away.

Round 3

Salgado is now extremely leery of the power Ortiz began to exhibit in the previous few minutes. Salgado now spoiling. Ortiz menaces with the jab and Salgado is reduced to desperate ploys, falling in with an overhand right. Ortiz scouts it, drifts out of its way with just a subtle rolling of his body weight, and counters with a hard right hand of his own, jolting Salgado.

Round 4

Ortiz hurting Salgado with everything he throws now, especially body shots. The ref calls time out for some reason - some kind of foul or accident? He calls time in after less than half a minute. Ortiz continues to land hard body shots as Salgado is circling away. Salgado exchanges hooks with Ortiz and both land but Ortiz's is more substantial. Clinch attempt by Salgado. Ortiz catches him with a very short uppercut as he is almost there, ready to wrap Ortiz's middle in his arms. Salgado goes to all fours and quits there.

Okay, the guy with the Day of the Dead mask (gold - with a single glittery sparkling gold tooth in contrast with the rest bone-white, and with brightly glowing blue dots for eyes) standing behind Massa is freaking me out.
