Dmitry Pirog he is a 5'11 34 year old Middleweight with a 20-0 15 KO's record. Born in Temryuk, Russia and currently residing in Gelendzhik Russia. The Grandmaster nickname came from the fact the Pirog is a chess player, which perfectly sums up his boxing style, he's like a machine he studies his opponents like a robot exploiting their mistakes all the while cutting off the ring and slowly stalking them like a predator, his defense is good and his jab is very good and he doesn't usually take unnecessary risks and is good at diversifying his attack using many different angles. Not many things in boxing ****ed me off as badly as the ill fated ruptured disk injury that took him out of action right before his match with Gennady Golovkin. I had been waiting wringing my hands in anticipation eagerly looking forward to that match and when they cancelled it, that was a huge letdown, it was a super fight between the 2 best EE fighters at the time, especially at middleweight. But now hopefully after taking 2 years for his back injury to recover, he's vowing to make a comeback and be a contender at MW once again, with GGG directly in his crosshairs. So Check Out for the first time or Remind yourselves of one of the best Middleweights that nobody knows about.:toney:toney:toney:toney

I don't know I think he was telling the truth, back injuries can be a *****, I had a pinched sciatic nerve, that made my leg numb for about 3 years, it me took awhile to get it fixed to where it doesn't bother me, a ruptured disk is not easy to return from and especially be in tip top shape and to box, he needed the time to recover.

Correct. I had a ruptured disc, and like you say, it takes a long , long time to even semi-recover, and most of us never fully recover.

Pirogs slightly "less impressive than usual" performance against the very limited Maciel (see above link folks), was due to this back injury. As an unintended side-effect, It led to Maciel bring vastly overrated on here at the time by some people.

This ^. Bizarre how quickly the landscape has changed at 160 in such a short time. I often argue that the 160 division isn't that weak in depth, just lacking elite talent... but I can kinda see the point that with Maravilla, Pirog, Sturm and JCC Jr (yeah - I know he ain't very good but was still considered a top name in the division until he ran into Sergio) having become non-factors at 160, there ain't much to shout about.

Damn shame Pirog couldn't have waited until after the GGG fight to start whaling on tractor tyres with a sledgehammer though.

The implication of the thread would appear to be that there might be some news of a possible return for Dmitry but I've not seen any news for a good while (cept an old thread that got bumped for no perceivable reason a week or two ago) is anyone aware of any new developments?

It does seem that Pirog has been working with/ training / managing one or two fighters out of Gelendzhik (including Lepikhin) so perhaps he's looking more to a role in the sport outside of the ring, but any concrete information is hard to come by.

Also - I never get tired of rewatching Jacobs vs Pirog. Nothing at all against Jacobs who I both like and respect... just more that warm glow you get when you see a cherry-pick going so awfully wrong.:D

Supposedly this was made on October 30th 2014, and he says he wants GGG in a fight or 2.

If he does come back he would be a very welcome addition to the division. Every guy with a decent chance to trouble Golovkin is welcome :bbb

Thanks (though my very rudimentary spoken Russian meant I couldn't get much outta the vid)... here's hoping though!:bbb

I'm guessing he'd have to get in a fairly high profile comeback fight if he wants GGG that quickly though. Such a long layoff has kinda taken him out of the picture, and (the Jacobs fight aside) he's barely known to US audiences, though I guess a Monacco fight could be viable.

Anyone in favour of a Jacobs rematch? Can't see Haymon allowing it, but that'd be just the ticket IMO.:deal
