The great fight that never happened. 2 undefeated knock out artists and former sparring partners from Russian speaking countries. Middleweight Kovalev vs Beterbiev of sorts. Win or lose, things would be a lot different for GGG had this fight taken place. By beating Pirog, especially by way of KO, GGG would instantly establish himself as a superstar. By losing to Pirog, however, he wouldn't be the "Triple G" we know today. Thoughts?
Stylistically Pirog might have been a nightmare for about 5 or 6 rounds until GGG figured him out and stop him late or win by close UD.
Pirog was evasive, a bit like Geale but a lot more skilled. He would have traded with GGG at some point, Golovkin late stoppage.
Kovalev v Beterbiev? Really? He couldnt put away Ishida yet you compare him with one of those guys? What am i missing?
There's also a mental aspect of this fight, it's not purely about how skillful they are. When I mention they were sparring partners, GGG was one of Pirog's sparring partners at the time, Pirog was the big deal back then and GGG was helping Pirog. Also Pirog is 2 years older than GGG, so GGG probably had the little brother status in their relationship. These things matter in a fight. Confidence is a major strength of Golovkin and I don't know if he'd be as much confident coming into the ring to face Pirog.
Beterbiev hasn't established himself yet, he's still a "prospect". I think it's an honour to him to use his name with these guys so early in his career, and not the other way around. It was a simple analogy to emphasize the significance of the fight anyway.
Come on man, Butterbeef's an absolute monster! I dont know who this Pirog guy is, but going by your anology, i thought he was an utter monster capable of beating Golovkin
Golov would have stopped him. Pirog was a good fighter, but KOing glass chinned Jacobs in no way meant he had the tools to beat Golov. I think he was good enough to give Golov a good fight for a few rounds, but eventually GGG would have hammered him and stopped him.
If Pirog was still around today it would definitely be the best fight for Golovkin out there. Still GGG would be a massive favorite, and I can't see Pirog give him too much trouble.
Healthy Pirog was the only guy at 160 that I would even think about picking to beat GGG, even then it is a maybe. Crazy to think that this was going to be GGG's HBO debut and Pirog was still up for it even though GGG was a replacement for Geale. Too bad we never got to see it.
