His Russian slickness wasn't no joke. Real shame he suffered that career ending back injury. This content is protected
Pirog would have won a decision I reckon. Pirog is super underrated. I know he doesn't have the resume (although he flat lined a prime Jacobs easier than anybody else, including Canelo and GGG), but he had all the makings of an ATG. His balance and footwork are some of the best I've ever seen.
Pirog was good no doubt but Golovkin is the guy with the resume. He's proved himself over and over, mostly at an age where most boxers are eyeing retirement. This fight was scheduled to be made and I have no doubt that 'superman' as they called him back then, would have won.
As shown by my own profile picture being of the man's greatest KO and in my opinion the most aesthetically pleasing one ever, Pirog is my personal favourite boxer ever just for his style. I think he would've outboxed GGG quite handily actually. He had the power to keep him honest and the shiftiness to make him miss constantly.
If you watch the Pirog vs Jacobs fight, you will notice that while Pirog indeed has a good defence while he is concentrating on defence - it is not seamlessly combined into his offense. Jacobs catches him clean several times when he stops jerking about and tries to come in. He is also easy to hit to the body. The way he keeps his hand up to parry means he is susceptible to the liver shot which was coincidentally one of GGG's favourite punches. I agree that it's a pity we never saw more from him; he does have a pleasing style.
As good as Pirog was, if GGG just goes and does what he did against Lemieux which is jab the living **** out of him then it’s game over for Pirog.
