Historians have generally considered Moldovans to be Romanians.

However, after 1924, within the newly created Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, Soviet authorities supported the creation of a different standardized language (see Moldovan language) allegedly in order to prove that Moldovans form a separate ethnic group.

Bivol's middle name is Yurievich. That means his father's first name is Yuri. You think that is a Romanian name?

Even if he was, how far ahead of him would you rate Maskaev? I'm not sure I would see Bivol as needing a whole lot more to surpass Big O in terms of greatness (and that's just with achievement weighted more heavily; if we're talking p4p h2h it already is Bivol and by some distance).

If par set by Maskaev is best wins of Rahman x2, Sam, Jefferson, Stewart and Tshabalala it could probably be said that Bivol had met or beaten par with, say, Kovalev, Barrera, Browne, Agnew, Berridge, and Valera.

I think let's start with the relatively low bar of best Moldovan-descent.

Arguably does have a better career than Raimkulov already, though. Can't recall off the top of my head, but is there anybody barring his way from being called the best Kyrgysz-born fighter?

Yeah not a whole lot. I tip Maskaev largely on the Rahman wins and his status as a contender for a decade+

    Oh snap, forgot he was.

Still though ...in total seriousness, what Vitali win is better than Barrera? Peter or Sanders?

The Herbie Hide win is better than Sullivan.

    Byrd Norris, Donald, Johnson, Gomez.

Oh yeah that's right. But Gomez alone was WAY ahead of a fringe contender who lost practically every round in two title fights.

Gómez at heavyweight is a better W than Barrera? Recall, his impressive four-year world title reign was down at cruiser and was eight years in the rearview mirror. Granted, the run of Bakhtov, McCall and Virchis just before he fought Vitali was a nice little string of victories and enough to make him a respectable contender but is that particular trio really much better than Murat, Shabranskyy and Smith?

He's not Moldovan. You aren't defined by who your parents are. A man must choose who he becomes.
