But dude you talking about Leonard in his last fight at 40 years old when he was coming off a 6 years retirement.
Actually Pac and Leonard's are fairly similar. Both had one nemesis who's style they struggled with (Hearns, Marquez) and both escaped that matchcup with a controversial draw and win Both lost in entertaining wars in their prime to the guy seen as the biggest warrior of elite fighters of their era (Duran, Morales) and both went to on to easily beat them in rematches and rubber matches. Both first proved they were for real beating a great boxer of their era (Benitez, Barrera) Both shocked the world and sealed their legacy by winning fights against opponents who were supposed to beat them in divisions they shouldn't have been in (Hager, DLH) Both were multiple weight world champs and each seen as the top dog of the Fab Four of their generations, with similar records (Leonard 4-1-1 vs Duran, Hearns, Hagler - Pac 5-1-1 Barrera, Morales, Marquez) Uncanny. Though Pac has a slight edge now following his impressive beatdown of Cotto and thumping of Hatton which goes to show how impressive his resume really is.
Comparing the Hagler win to the DLH win is just as inappropriate as comparing it to the Foreman win. :yep
Seems silly now, but DLH was supposed to crush Pac just as Foreman was supposed to kill Ali and Hagler to a lesser extent was supposed to beat Leonard. Though DLH was never anywhere near as formidable as Foreman and Hagler were
The thing is, Ali very clearly beat Foreman (due as much to his gameplan as to superior talent) and Pacquiao very clearly beat De la Hoya (due, if we're being honest, at least more than 80% to the weight drain) while many people to this day insist that Leonard did not beat Hagler despite the official verdict.
True, but it is the win that sealed Leonard's legacy. Even if he didn't win clearly, it was a W, and the fact he shouldn't have been as competitive as he was after the layoff enhances it to Ali-Foreman type status
If you don't believe that fact, that's your perogative. But the only reason Leonard challenged Hagler when he did after publicly toying with the idea of fighting Hagler for at least 6 years was because he knew Hagler was shot.Read Steve Marantz's book as he lays it out so clearly with facts and actual events that anyone can understand it.Plus,if you don't think Hagler's reflexes, handspeed and footspeed weren't gone when he fought Leonard, just watch Hagler from the Sibson fight and compare that with the Hagler from the Roldan,or especially, the Mugabi fight. He still had his power and chin, but that's about it.
Yes, both Ali & SRL have beaten some of the greatest figfhters of all time around their weight class, Liston, Frazier, Foreman, Hagler, Duran, Hearns, Benitez, Patterson etc etc..... & both are up there with any boxer in history as far as `ability at their peak` is concerned. If you are asking who is more complete ?... Leonard ! If you are asking who was more sublime in their prime ?... Ali (only just tho IMO) If you are asking who is greater ?..... no contest... Muhammad Ali.
This is as true a post as can be called on this matter (Im a fan of both guys so bias isnt a major factor) :good
