Do amateur boxers always go full power or do they hold back?

Just wondering because when I watch some amateur fights of big names it looks like they are holding back

Nope. Amateur fighters go all out. They want to look good and knock people out just like anyone else.

The Olympics are a bit different b/c they only judge based on punches landed so they focus on speed and not power. A typical amateur fight all over America- fighters go all out.

No, it's not fencing like many keyboard warriors on here claim. A kid got KO'd for minutes at a show I was at the other week.

Amateur is gona change world wide to pro style scoring next year and the head guards are going too. Boxers only throw half a dozen power shots a round at the top level but that's due to the scoring system.

It is very different. Margarito would be terrible in an amateur fight, many amateurs are not tough enough to go pro.

I dont think they hold back, well maybe in Olympic they may flick for points

i just dont like the system no points for body punching???thats an essential piece of the game

plus i feel so many punches go unscored since the judges have to press a button almost simultaneously

i remember in 08 during the olympics fnf broke down the scoring whether it was bk or rafael or teddy or joe

they had like a ps2 controller and were like 3 guys at different angles gotta hit the button at like the same time

i can see why some shots go unscored

also corruption may have something to do with it

They don't generate the same power as they don't usually get set and plant thier feet to turn with maxiumum power. They are more in and out on thier toes.

Yeah sure in 2006. Look at the Ukrainian medallists at the recent worlds... Amateur boxing has been about clean power shots for years now, inside fighting and bodypunching. Kind of sick of people who obviously haven't followed it for years commentating on it.

I just had an amateur fight two nights ago. I promise you I was going all out, so was my opponent. So was everyone else in every fight I saw, and I saw about 15 of 21 fights other than my own.

Fair enough Lefty, maybe I'm out of date with amateur side of things, but this is a boxing forum and people have opinions. I still think that on the whole they don't sit in the pocket and set as comfortable as many pros.

That's because, on the whole, pros are much better than amateurs.

without the headguards, and points scoring, how will it be any different to the pros?

There is a simple way to learn. Go and do the judges course.
