Calzaghe is not fighting an american so I see no reason to see why his success should have any relevence to your average US boxing fan. Even Hatton Mayweather is not national. Many in the UK support Mayweather and many do not support Hatton.

Boxing is usually about the man not the nation, only on occasion when perhaps the two boxers somehow epitomise their respective nations at a time when the nations need a hero it can be about countries but not in this case.

I am not Welsh or English but I like the boxers and have watched them for many years. I would never support an English team because in that case it is more like national rivalry, but I have supported many English boxers over the years.

If Ricky and Joseph could pull it off it would be great for our historic standings amongst the elite boxers of the past.. A great sporting triumph for our nation.....

I dont think it makes much difference. I will admit that if there is some sort of hype with England vs. America in a boxing match, more often than not I will probably root for the American. But its not like Mayweather is Mr. All-American putting a nation on his shoulders. A lot of Americans hate Floyd. This isn't Louis vs. Schmeling. Also, I noticed you specifically called out Americans. Why not Kessler fans? Why America specifically? Is this some sort of inferiority complex or something? The same thing happened when Lacy was about to fight Calzaghe, and brit fans were hyping up Lacy more than American ones. Saying Lacy was "The Great American Hope" as if Calzaghe was American enemy number one. Most boxing fans, let alone the general public, knew nothing of Lacy and were hardly hyping him like the Brits were. Calm down with this, it's the most pointless topic in all the forums. If Hatton wins, than he will get all the credit in the world from me and at least part of me will be happy. If Calzaghe wins, good for him, maybe he will shed some of the well deserved criticism he has recieved.

    How could this happen?

I agree that they move up if both win (Joe does not go to number one if Floyd wins again...especially since a win vs Hatton is bigger than one vs Kessler), it helps. Hatton would leapfrog quite a few. But why would they be above Pac?

Even if Calzaghe and Hatton beat Kessler and Mayweather respectively, the pound for pound list would still have a non-European fighter at the top...

    1. Manny Pacquiao
    2. Joe Calzaghe
    3. Ricky Hatton

I HONESTLY could care less about nationality. I think it is hard to know about some of the overseas fighters because they just don't get the coverage here. It's not a hate thing for most people on here imo. For the record I have both of the Brits losing though....and once again no it's not because of a hate thing. You can shuv it in my face if im wrong and make me eat crow, but I don't pick fights based on nationality. It's that plain and simple. In fact from what I have seen on these boards there is more hate coming from the other end......im going to get a lot of **** for that one :yep

If Joe wins ..then he can finally justify the high rating that ESB gives him p4p#5..

    and thats generous

I would give Hatton his props but he won't win. I already give Joe his props after Lacy massacre.

This is stupid. It's boxing. I don't give a **** who's on top, as long as it's a good fighter. Posts like this are only made to get a reaction. But then again there are the nationalistic idiots that will respond poorly. I want Hatton to win, I just have that feeling that Mayweather will win (I really want Hatton to win though, he's much more fun to watch).

Hatton shouldn't win, really shouldn't. Calzaghe could and even if he wins every second of every round in a magical manner, people will keep Mayweather at number one, not matter how lacklustre his win over Hatton.
