I'm doing research about boxing and I came across this title 'Dammy Canner', 'Dami Cainer', or 'Dami Caner'. It's a title given to an Indian boxer (1960's) It was written in regional language not in english, making it hard to google it. Some sources say it's a name or title of a legendary boxer who was active before Ali's era.
How is his name typed in the native language? The only Indian Boxer I can find from that time period who was high level representing India, and could be considered a 'legend' there, is Hawa Singh. Did he compete from India or from USA etc?
Hi. I really appreciate your reply, Hawa Singh fought majorly in armatures and represented India. but the name I mentioned was from professional boxing. He fought within India, back in those days many challenger fights used to happen against American, British boxers and sailors. I mean during the period of Gun boat jack and Maung thaung.
A writer called Shamya Dasgupta wrote a book "Bhiwani Junction: The Untold Story of Boxing in India" a few years ago. I think it is available on kindle still. I have read it but I really don't recall any mention of any boxer with a name like that. Indian boxers' records from the golden era are inadequately recorded on boxrec.com, so that is unlikely to help much.
