I heard he once killed a guy in the ring, its understandable he got fed up with the game after that.

Many boxers have a love-hate relationship with the sport, some outright love it, I don't think many just hate it. It's too hard of an endeavor if you have no love for it. You see a lot of these guys that say they hate the game coming back and back again long after they should have retired.

Most of them are probably like Floyd. They understand that they can die in there, and they know that they're getting damaged no matter what, maybe to a point where their later years are going to be severely compromised. They're doing something that WILL hurt them significantly, the only question is how MUCH long term damage they're gonna take. It's not surprising that they have conflicting emotions about what they're doing.

    Jimmy Doyle

He even had a dream that he would kill Doyle if they fought. Fight makers got him to sign to fight Doyle anyways. It was a wrap from there.

One of the strangest cases is Gary Lockett. He stated he wasn't in love with the sport on numerous occasions. His real interest was property development and management. Boxing was just a way to fund his bigger goals in real estate.

Lockett had a good record, and was actually a pretty decent fighter, but he quit boxing at a pretty young age. He had little to do with the sport for a few years.

Now he's heavily involved in boxing again, but he is a trainer not a fighter. He has two fighters who are his full time, he helps out with a handful of other fighters, and is working on building a larger stable of his own. He appears to have real potential as a trainer, and says that for the first time in his life he is absolutely in love with the sport.

    Strange case.

Floyd Patterson was kind of the opposite. He said that when his career started he loved boxing describing it to be a "flame within him that burns for a loooong" time. Also saying that he would have fought for free

But after he married his second wife he said he lost his love for boxing. But once he retired he fell in love again training his son to be champ (which is actually similiar to Lockett)

Boxing could be a love hate relationship.

Do you guys ever think that when boxers bad mouth the sport they are actually talking about "the boxing business," and not "the sport of boxing"?

It would be awfully easy to become really jaded about about the business end of things.

Unlike some sports, the experience and pain in training does not compare in actual competition.
In some sports the training is often more painful (swimming, track and field, etc.). Many professional boxers come close to death during competition, some too often (looking at you macho Mexicans).

    I don't blame them.

    What Patterson said

""It's like being in love with a woman. She can be unfaithful, she can be mean, she can be cruel, but it doesn't matter. If you love her, you want her, even though she can do you all kinds of harm. It's the same with me and boxing. It can do me all kinds of harm but I love it."
