In the past on this very forum I have stated I admire his dedication, spirit, workrate, sportsmanship etc and I even love the country he lives in .... all I have said is that his style and technique are in question in a true boxing sense (oh and I hang my head in shame beacuse I have said he slaps in the past!)
When Joe loses you have every right to complain buddy. P.S. True boxing sense? Surely a fighter should be free to use whatever he chooses that he finds works?
I think everyone here is a fan of the sport first, then individuals second. It would be pretty pointless to have a forum to discuss boxing and not have threads about individuals where we just chew the fat about boxers we like/dislike. Without these threads of cheerleading/hating we would be left with about a dozen topics about technical aspects of boxing and the discussions would be exhausted in a matter of days. The rest is subjective, frivolous and often childish. But let's face it - that's were all the fun is!
I hint some sarcasum in your posts. I could be wrong, though. It's not disrespectful to make an observation and say he is slapping his opponents at times. But it's disrespectful to call him Slappy rather than Joe Calzaghe. None of this directed specifically at you by the way. Even if you don't respect a fighters style, you should respect the fact he had the courage to get into the ring.
Boxing is an inherently emotional sport. Boxing fans are very passionate about their favorite fighters. Look at the endless poster wars that we've fought over a potential Calzaghe/Pavlik fight. Guys like Joe and Kelly don't come along all that often, so their respective fans get incredibley excited about them, and sometimes we tend to lose sight of reality. All in all there are many Calzaghe fans who are very smart posters, but let one of them say Joe walks through Pavlik, and in my book it's instant dumb ass; see what I mean? All the fussin' and fuedin' is where the fun is, and trust me, nobody puts up a better fight than a good Calzaghe fan! Boo
By the same token, their are Kelly Pavlik fans who suggest that Joe Calzaghe gets stopped very early against Pavlik. If there was evidence to suggest it, then I wouldn't have any problem believing it. Fact is, Joe has never been beaten and therefore never stopped in his entire career. He is more experianced than Pavlik, has faster hands, and has shown the ability to adapt on the biggest stage. This will be a competitive fight. A tightly contested one.
Yup. Gotta have a differential in opinion for their to be fun. If we all agreed on everything, it would get pretty boring. We need some guys to say Calzaghe slaps, and others to praise him as the greatest thing since sliced bread. This evens the bar.
I'm no fan of the man, don't like his style one bit, and I used to slag him along with the rest when he was fighting bums year-in-year-out. But since he has fought and beat both Kessler and Hopkins I have to give him his dues. You can say that Kessler was unproven, or that Hopkins was an old man, but they were still name-fighters, and two of the best available for him to pick in and around his weight. Fair play to the lad:good
I edited my post after you read it, and said: All the fussin' and fuedin' is where the fun is, and trust me, nobody puts up a better fight than a good Calzaghe fan! Now I think I can rest my case!
One thing is for sure this is the finest boxing website/forum I have come across on the net and it is very clear that everyone loves the sport of boxing on here. It's like the best bar stool chat on boxing you can have in the comfort of your own home! Cheers!
I agree. This forum is the best out there for the world of boxing. You just get some disrespectful members also.
same way I feel, I dont like Calzaghe, never thought much of him, but when he wins against known people he earns some more of my respect. I gave him respect for beating bhop.
