All the time, and I never am, which is why I make it a point to go out of my way while doing the RBR's to point out the repulsive dick riding of the commentators, because most of the time it doesn't quite reflect what's actually going on in the ring. I think that's the main reason why matches that shouldn't be considered controversial like Gonzalez-Sor Rungvisai and Pacquiao-Horn are considered as such by fans. They don't have the same influence on the judges they have on the fans, which is why some of these decisions that are not egregious end up being blown out of proportion by fanboys.
I'm usually influenced by commentators, I usually have to re-watch a fight mute to score it correctly. Hopefully judges wear sound proof ear muffs or something.
I agree with most of what you've said except for the part about Taylor and Chavez. Chavez was very slow to start and Meldrick won about 9 rounds and hit him something like 200 more times in that fight. I don't think the commentators said that Taylor was landing the more damaging blows. He was clearly outboxing and outlanding Chavez for the first 9 rounds though. It just so happened that Taylor punched lighter, was less durable, and marked up easier than Chavez; so Chavez managed to overcome him with a final rally anyway.
Commentators have huge influence over people who don't know what they're watching. Which would be about 95% of this site. In fact, that's one of the reasons they're there.
Commentators need to STFU for most of the fight. I hate it when they start calling shots because they tend to get ahead of themselves or excited and start calling shots even when they don't land. Also, if there is a house favorite, they'll focus on the work the favorite is doing while sometimes completely ignore what the underdog is landing.
Yes, Taylor was connecting more frequently than Chavez. But the way that the commentators were describing it made Taylor's lighter punches appear far more significant than they were. As you know, rounds are won not just on numbers of punches but on their quality. The commentators were ignoring the extremely hard punches Chavez was landing and focusing on numbers alone and even trying to minimize that they were harder punches-something that the ref described as bone-breaking punches. During the introduction, the commentator said that Taylor was stronger than Chavez. During the second round the commentator said that Taylor had done more damage with his punch than Chavez had. Time 32:35 During an earlier Exchange, Taylor is said to have won the exchange because he tapped Chavez in the belly after Chavez had connected two solid punches to Taylor's head.. As Chaves was landing hard punches in the first two rounds, the commentators were talking about other things. They described Taylor punches as landing solidly on Chavez's face. They were also happily praising Taylor for using foul blows on the hips and getting away with it. Chavez is described as being damaged by Taylor's punches and they began predicting Taylor would knock Chavez out. Commentator Comment: He is NOT hurting Taylor! Taylor's punches are described as savage. ------------------------------------------------ Other Comments: Chavez on the verge of going down! Chavez REDUCED to head-hunting He rocks Chavez but Chavez doesn't rock him That's just during the first four rounds. The garbage continues throughout. Don't believe it-check it out. This content is protected BTW The first two rounds were Chaves's. The commentators gave them to Taylor.
Commentators are so very biased. Roid Jones was extremely biased against Kovalev during the rigged fight against the cheating SOB, it was extremely obvious, nothing said about the three very low blows to the testicles at the end either..............no, commentators do not influence me at all, but sometimes they make me want to puke!
the judges should wear headphones to block out the crowd and people around them etc because the crowd cheering can definitely influence it
Commentators are at the service of the networks which employ them, the same networks which sign fighters to exclusive deals and whose livelihood revolves around those fighters winning. So yeah, there's always an agenda. People always point to what city or nation the fight is taking place in, but often which networks are back which fighters takes a back seat to that when it is just a pertinent. Hell, Golden Boy owns Ring Magazine who many people look to for P4P rankings without a second thought. Contextualize every opinion you hear.
Commentators are there to tell you is winning the fight because HBO, Showtime, etc. think fans are stupid..................Roid Jones is one of the most biased I have ever heard............
This is the best piece of commentary I've heard in recent memory by Teddy Atlas with his analogy to the puddle melting in the sun, it deserved to end the fight right there on those words alones This content is protected
