I was just wondering if any knows how much more money fighters get to fight on PPV rather than HBO or SHO? There are some fights coming up ( Hopkins vs Dawson ) that i want to see but know there is no F'n way im paying $50 to watch it. Cant they at least stack up the PPV card with a couple fights of that caliber to make it worth it or just fight on HBO?:fire

To a degree they do if they are getting a piece of the PPV buys. To be honest PPV is ruining the damn sport in my opinion.

Or at least show the entire undercard. When i go to fights there are always 10 fights or so. The people are paying alot of money for the PPV they should get more then 2 or 3 fights

yes and no. Depends on the situation with the promoter and network really. If a fight happens on say ESPN FNF, HBO BAD, HBO WCB, ShoBox The next generation, or any of those broadcasts that occur on regular HBO or Showtime, the network essentially controls everything, they pay the camps their cut(usually guaranteed) and the network takes full ownership of the card, so no matter if 1 Million or 1 thousand people watch the card the Network has to take it.

With PPV, the system is different since the promotions are taking a much bigger share of the risk, like having to pay the boxers, should the PPV go belly up HBO must hand over a much larger share of the pie and depending on the contract a fighter has with their promoter will determine the exact breakdown of that PPV money in regards to them.

So it really depends on the fight and the promotional contract. Say for example Bernard Hopkins, he probably makes a bit less on PPVs than he does on HBO cards because he can't really draw PPV crowds. Where as Mayweather with his gigantic PPV watching base earns more than he ever could taking guys on in HBO WCB events.

If anything, when TV took over boxing it has been downhill. The networks are paying giant purses to fighters that have no fanbase (Berto, S. Martinez, so forth). They're creating a false market and making lazy promoters. Why do you think Lou Dibella can't sell tickets for the "P4P #3"?

Depends on how much HBO or SHO are willing to put up for the fight, depends on the fighter, how much clout their management has with HBO or SHO.

Generally for fighters that aren't too popular and not able to generate much interest they won't put up too much. But then you have a guy like Berto who's manager has a lot of influence on HBO and he's getting 1M+ paydays whoever he fights despite not being well known.

In contrast you have such a popular guy like Canelo Alvarez, who's sold out a stadium in the US and set viewing records in the US in his last two regular HBO fights, and must be a massive draw on Mexican PPV, and because he's young and naive his promoter and HBO are taking advantage of him reaping massive profits from his fights and only paid him a few hundred K in those two HBO fights.

Hopkins not being popular won't get much on regular HBO, might be getting a better deal with it being PPV taking into account the different types of revenue Golden Boy can bring into it with their promotion. If it does well, he makes more, if it bombs, he won't be losing out on much.

I understand the big draw guys being on PPV. Thats kind of my point with Hopkins. His fight is on PPV. A lot of people want to see that fight that wont be willing to shell out 50 bucks for it. These kind of fights should be on HBO or SHO time or put on a card with 2 or 3 fights of equal match ups.

That was the initial plan, but HBO's and Showtimes Budgets were pretty much spent by the time this fight was supposed to happen.

PPV actually makes a promoter spend their money and PROMOTE.
