Like Oscar and Cotto like Reyes and Floyd likes Winning. Do they were it whenever they want or are there rules?

So if Pac wants to wear Reyes, but diaz wants to wear Grant then they have a problem because the contract says reyes????

So what if one wants pillows and the other wants hamburger patties for gloves? They are both legal gloves.

No, both fighters must wear GLOVES. Pillows, hamburgers, chains.... all illegal in boxing.

When they MAKE their contracts they decide on gloves.

Boxers that have bad hands tend to like gloves like Winning. The weight of gloves is the same, but Winning gloves for example, sacrifice padding on some parts of the gloves, to have more padding on other places.

Some ignorant folks like to say that Winning gloves soften your punches, this is not the case. Reyes gloves don't make your punches any harder, or soften them any less than other gloves. The differences in gloves really have most effect on the wearer's hands. Reyes has the reputation of a "punchers" glove, but in my experience with knowing different fighters who have different opinions with gloves.... is that this is just based on how they feel when you're wearing them. Reyes gloves feel kind of 'tight' and just make me feel like I'm punching faster... but I know that really they make no difference. Winning gloves definitely feel like they give my knuckles more protection than Reyes gloves though. Like when I'm hitting the bag and I don't hit it completely squarely.... with Winning gloves you don't even feel it, but with Reyes gloves it causes a bit of pain to hit a bag impoperly... or to hit the top of someones head, or their eblows at the wrong angle.

Grant gloves feel like they are more secure around the wrist to me. They feel 'fast' to me, but as I said before, I'm sure they don't actually make my punches any faster!

And as for Everlast... even though thats what I've used more than other gloves (though I use Winning only now that I've saved up to buy a few pair, they're a bit expensive for those that don't know!), eh I just don't like them. I've never worn a pair that felt comfortable. The positive things that the other brands I mentioned made me feel... I get none of those with Everlast gloves. None of the great support or comfot of Winning, none of that 'fast' feel of the Reyes or Grant...

I didn't read your post because I don't care at this point the description of each glove. I want to know WHY some contracts stipulate the fighters using a specific brand of glove. And it is a big deal in some cases. Why can't a fighter choose what he wants as long as they meet state and boxing regulations?

I hope some other boxers here will give some inputs on gloves. Everyone seems to have different opinions on gloves! :p

Some fighters try and stipulate not only what gloves they are wearing, but also what gloves the opponent wears. For example, when Nate fought Diaz, Nate wanted to wear Reyes. Diaz camp complained at the weigh-in, saying that their deal with King stipulated that Nate would have to wear Everlast. After an hour or so back and forth with the lawyers and the sanctioning bodies, and Savannah threatening to pull Diaz out of the fight, the lawyers determined that since Team Campbell was not a party to the agreement between Diaz and King, that we were not bound by it, and Nate could wear whatever gloves he wanted. They further stipulated that the agreement between Diaz and King that Savannah referred to only addressed what gloves Diaz would wear, and did not address the opponents gloves. So Savannah was advised by all 3 sanctioning bodies that if he pulled out, then Diaz would be stripped of all 3 titles, so the fight went ahead.

Usually, a fighter will only care what gloves his opponent wears under 2 circumstances:

    1. He wants to try and gain an advantage, even if only psychological, over his opponent, by preventing him from wearing his glove of choice. Or, in the case of guys with shaky chins, they may want their opponent to wear what is considered a "softer" glove such as Everlast.

    2. If they have an endorsement deal with a specific glove manufacturer, in some cases it is worth more money if both fighters wear that brand of glove.

    3. in some cases, it isnt the fighter at all, but the promoter that wants to stipulate gloves. This is true mainly for ESPN level fights. Everlast will usually provide gloves free for the whole card if the televised fights all wear Everlast. If any other gloves are shown on the telecast, then they want you to pay for the gloves. So for the smaller ESPN type shows, you can save $1000 or better off your show budget by making everyone wear Everlast.

And the biggest complaint that I hear about Everlast is that the thumb is not long enough.

Floyd wears grant gloves now ... Cotto wears everlast as well !!

Its all apart of the contract negotiations ... because Floyd wanted to wear grant when he fought Oscar ... RJJ wanted to wear grant when he fought Tito ... they both ended up wear something else.

At times its all about what feels most comfortable to you and whatever matches with your outfit.
