I've been told by a few coaches that i have good punching power. I know that to be a good boxer you need more than just power (speed, stamina, good footwork, defence, heart..etc) Just curious as to what others think This content is protected thanks!
Yeah you have good power. You could develop your boxing ability around it and be a threat. It will take a lot of hard work and discomfort, but it's fun to experience your development. Good luck!
appreciate the reply. I think I need to start taking it a bit more seriously. I'm 25 now, and if I did have any potential I wouldn't want to waste it. I'll admit I'm lazy when it comes to the training but it's all or nothing I guess. Thanks for the kind words
Mate to be honest, from that video i have no ideia. I dunno how anyone could you from those 3 secs lol. But you shouldnt really worry about that especially if you are a beginer (dunno if you are), just keep getting better overall. Only thing i can point out is that you are pushing the bag slightly when you punch it, dont do that, snap your punches, especially the jab. Keep at it bro, cheers
Cheers for the feedback unbirth & bacon maker. Do you mean that I don't bring my hand back fast enough? Or the opposite, that I'm bringing my hand back too quick? I think for the video I was just trying to punch hard and not really snap the punches. If by snapping punches you mean bringing my hand back quicker but the punch being a bit less powerful. Thanks
This content is protected This is what you should aim for. He snaps and punches sharp and sure has power in them.
Definitely some hard knocks there - keep it up. You'll get more power by snapping your punches, you'll know you're doing it right when you get the right 'smack' sound, also your speed will improve. Power and strength all comes from the ground up
Try to "bounce" your fist off the bag. That extra push through takes way more energy and those punches'll gas you out quick. Maybe Manny Pacquiao isn't a good example. His hand speed is definitely fast. But don't confuse handspeed with actual punch speed. 2 different things entirely. Watch basically any pro boxer. They snap their fist out, then bounce it right back. Also your right hand appears only half extended on impact, resulting in a weaker punch. Give yourself half a step back and straighten it out. You can get way more behind it. Not saying whether you have good power or not. I'm just saying you can make it hurt a lot more. What would hurt more, a train going 2 miles/hr or 100? Same amount of weight behind it, but one will push you aside and the other will turn you into compost.
turn your hand over on the right hand punch.....twist ...the motion should have knuckles facing upward /palm down before impact you are hitting it straight on with arm punching with no twist ..use shoulders more drive into the target....unless you are throwing body punches which should be fully digging into the target using the lats. Hard to tell from the close up vid but you are too squared up on the jab and maybe not given yourself not enough room for full power extention on the right hand? not sure but seems like you also threw a few hybrid jab/hooks in there ...commit to an actual hook and put hip rotation on it ...hit should be on side of the bag. otherwise its just arm shots without a real stiff jab or complete hook. overall work on hitting the bottom of the bag to strengthen hands where its more compact and it will get your body conditioned for harder hitting! dont go by what most say you will always have a tough crowd by anything you post, according to a few on here and some other sites i only have O.K power...even though mike tyson was impressed.????...lmao!
You are ok but need work. Stop leaning forward or falling into the punch. To get full punching rotation you need to stand up straighter but keep the chin tucked. The rule I was taught was ""one shoulder comes forward the other shoulder goes backward", the hips must shift that weight and that's where the real power comes from. When you threw that right hand you were very tight, your right shoulder hardly extended forward with your body. (For example look at Miguel Cotto here http://s1.reutersmedia.net/resource...09&w=780&fh=&fw=&ll=&pl=&sq=&r=BTRE7B30HJB000. There's way more power there, just practice your technique. Punch through the target not at it. If you fall forward as you throw you will lose power and you will be off balance. One other thing I noticed is that you need to keep your guard a little tighter like you expect contact because that's what boxing is about, not just giving it but taking it. Punch the bag like you expect to get hit back. Tight, fast and covered up. Pounce and then back into guard. Cnce you get comfy then you can relax the guard as you punch but you need fundamentals first. Please stop pawing or as they say "being lazy with that jab". The jab is like a pistol it comes back to the exact same place when you punch. You are dropping it on the way as you reload. As you spar you will find guys will throw straight rights all day long over that jab and they wont miss. When you get comfy in time then you can be like Joe Calzaghe and leave it low. It throws from the cheek back to the cheek in a straight line not an arch. One of my old trainers, who actually fought Manny Pacquiao always started our drills with that. And I've been boxing 15 years. He said always said you have to reset the technique no matter your style or your experience. Every 3 months he would do this for his stable of pro fighters (guys who won versions of the world heavyweight titles and national champs in my country) Good luck man! You are on your way.
Not good power because of lack of technique. Learn to throw the punches properly. Technique is everything. Punch through the target as well.
You cant tell by watching a bag be punched. Some bags move more/make louder noise than others. Need context. Do you spar much? Have you accidentally hurt someone while not really trying? Are the people you spar wary even if you are not putting to much meaning behind your punches? Do people respect your Jab or tend to walk through it? The fellas holding the mits can feel the weight of shots, if they are being honest with you you might have naturally heavy hands.
