I'm 14 years old, and I am overweight and out of shape (I weigh 206 pounds). I wanted to give boxing a shot because I heard it was a great way to get in shape, and that it is pretty fun.

My parents and I are still working out when the training will start (It will be at a local gym). Should I start working out before I start?

Just go to the boxing lessons. But prepare that the first weeks are going to be really tough, but after that your condition gets better and you get used to it.

Just don't get serious until you are in good shape, but you can use boxing workouts to get there.

If the gym offers fitness/boxing-cardio classes, do them. So many kids think they're too cool for them, but honestly, they're a great way to get in shape. Once you can do them without struggling, then you're ready. But like the other guys said, no need to wait. Get in there - it's like jumping into a cold pool - it's really the only way to do it - otherwise, human nature says that trying to get in shape - to box leads to making excuses and procrastination. Nothing goog comes out of that.

A little update: After a few days, we finally got in touch with the owner of the gym (He was out of town). I'm touring the place after school on Monday, and if thinks work out, I'll start the classes next saturday

agree with everyone here, just go to the boxing drills. Boxing is best exercise for cardio and a bit of strength. I lost 20lbs from boxing

So ... don't start running until you're fit?

The idea that running can't improve a person's conditioning is ... well, it's not correct.

If you are a really unfit individual you are more likely to do more harm then good.
    So s**** is right.

If you are that unfit you aren't going to be able to do a boxing workout either, and it would cause harm.

    So what's your point?

If you aren't ready to run, walk until you build up to it.

most of your boxing training is going to be conditioning---you will get fit by training:bbb:boxxso you'll be depriving yourself of time if you focus purely on fitness before you start.
