I think the three hard Holyfield fights knocked all the stuffing out of him.

A very talented fighter, but I think people get a bit overexcited about his "potential". Jack's post, the second in this thread, has been lauded by other members and rightly so, because it's a fine peice of writing, but Jack does suggest that Bowe is better than his best performance.

A fighter has a career. During his career, if he is a top fighter, he fights from the top to the bottom. The best he appears to be in that time is as good as he is as far as I am concerned. I don't hand out baubles for potential no matter what Futch says.

Watch the Hollyfield trilogy, all three fights. Appraise the fighter that you see in those contests. That's what Bowe was.

Believe it or not, i would favor the peak (in shape) Bowe that beat Holyifeld the first time over a peak Tyson, Joe Louis or Marciano. He was an offensive machine with decent pop, great stamina, good pure boxer and one of the best inisde fighters in heavyweight history. His offense and great chin and heart makes up for his lack of defence.

Typical "Bowe had no heart" posts coming out of the woodwork. As always.

Who could say that he didn't have heart? He has never quit despite the beating he took from Golota or anyone else. He had plenty of heart.

    Bowe is grossly over-rated.
He had the shortest peak of any heavyweight champions ever.

In fact I would go so far as to say that he had a shorter peak than Buster Douglas. Douglas beat former and future World Champions as well as owning Tyson.
Bowe did manage to beat his wife but was armed with a fork.

The blatant ducking of Lewis is one of the most cowardly things done by any heavyweight champion.
Herbie Hide had Bowe out on his feet, imagine what Lewis or Tyson would have done to him?
If Bowe was not American he would regarded as no better than say Frank Bruno or any of a plethora of 2nd tier fighters.
His standing [by Americans] only bolstered by what they say he could of done even though when given the opportunity he didn't or couldn't.

    Yup.

Those beatings he took from Golota are the epitome of heart.

He refused to quit in two fights that resulted in ****ing BRAIN DAMAGE.

    Give me a break.

He beat peak Holyfield twice and Evander is the only heavyweight of all time that is a 4 time heavyweight champion. Plus he was in his prime. Honestly, Bowe was the only fighter that beat Peak Evander at 100%.

He also knocked out Bert Cooper in 2 rounds. Cooper was the first to expose Michael Moorer for having a weak chin and the first to hurt Holyifeld.

He also quicky knocked out Jesse Fuergeson, who gave Tyson a hard fight and Tyson didn't even knock him out from what i remember. Bowe stopped him brutally in 2 rounds and it took Tyson 6 rounds to get a disqualification.
Fuegerson also had a win over Buster Douglas who later exposed Tyson.

Bowe was also the first to beat Hide, weather he had Bowe out on his feet or not, Hde can punch reguardless. Hide was also unbeaten at 26-0 at the time and was champion so your opinion on that is moot.

Bowe also had good wins over good contenders like Donald, Dokes, Martin,
    Tubbs, Golota, Tillery, ect.

Overrated by balls, Bowe was no joke and with the short career that he had, he accomplished some great things.

/how did Ferguson giv e Tyson a ''hard'' time. Because he lasted a couple of rounds

Bowe beating an old Feguson means little to nothing especially since he was ducking Lewis to do so.

    Hide ??? strictly THIRD TIER.

    Bowe really lost to Tubbs.

and nobody can ever call the Golota fights ''wins'' for Bowe.

    Tillery  .

He beat Holy because Holy chose to brawl rather then box.

He does not win the Holyfield trilogy we would not be talking about him today.

What did Bowe acomplish in his short carreer ? ducking big punchers throwing belts away breaking up the HW titles ?. Getting beat across the ring by perenial loser Golota. Becoming a fat lazy POS ?

If you want to talk about ducking then Tyson ducked a prime Lewis as well and he ducked Holyfield, faking an injury an pulled out of the fight. Fuergeson was suppose to be a ''step up'' for Tyson and he didn't get rid of him the way he was suppose to. Bowe handled his buisness properly and left no doubts. What are some of the excuses you will make for Tyson? Furgeson held on to him? Yes, but he also held on to Bowe and Bowe simply pushed him off and went back to work.

Also, Jesse was no push over at all. He beat Ray Mercer (though out of shape), Buster Douglas and a few other solid wins so he wasn't the average stepping stone.

Hide was 26-0 and was the WBO heavyweight champion and thats not an impressive victory? You are nothing but critisizing Bowe and thinking only of the bad things. Hide beat Michael Bentt to win the title who previously upset Morrison. Which makes Bowe's victory over him seem even more impressive actually.

On paper, Bowe beat Golota. People say that Lennox Lewis beat Vitali Klitschko when he was getting the snot beat out of him as well. Doesn't really make a difference. When your resume is being reviewed, experts normally look at who you beat and not how. There have been many contraversial decisions. You could make a string case that Young beat Ali or Norton won ALL of those fight with Ali. Whats done is done.

Making excuses there? Bowe beat Holyfield because he was the better man and clearly had his number. Not skill wise, but mentally. He was able to suck Evander into brawls by getting into his head, hitting him low and after the bell. Holyfield has a warrior's mentality and Bowe knew how to take him out of his fight.

There can be excuses made for any fight. According to you, i could say that Ali beat Foreman only because Foreman was tired from teeing off on him or that Bentt upset Morrison only because Tommy had a weak chin.
What did Bowe accomplish? Become a silver medalist in the olympics, becoming the only man to beat a peak Holyifeld, becoming unified/undisputed heavyweight champion, multiple world champion and retiring with only one loss on his record. He was also way past his prime when the Golota fight occured.

    Not very impressive at all...

If this was Lennox lewis's resume, Lewis would not get within a sniff of being in the top 50.
Bowe lost to a Holyfield who went onto loose to Moorer.

The hardest hitting fighetr he fought - Hide who has a glass jaw, hurt Bowe badly then foolishly tried to trade with somone of 30 pounds heavier.
I think Lewis, Tyson or even Vitali Klitschko would blow out Bowe very quickly - similar to what happened to Golota who proved to be at least Bowes equal.

If Bowe was British and Lewis was American you would be hard pushed to find anyone that would even remotely suggested that Bowe had a chance against Lewis

Thats very untrue. Bowe lost to an in shape Holyfield that didn't have heart conditions at the time, unlike the Evander that fought Moorer. Look at the Holyifled/Moorer fight and see for yourself, Evander's cheeks were very puffy and he mainly stared at Micheal throughout the fight and honestly, i still believed that Evander beat him because at the last round, the espn commentators said that Moorer needed a knockout in order to win. That look horrible for Moorer because he couldn't even put away a sick/ill version of Evander that had ZERO stamina. Imagine what Bowe would have done to that version of Holyfeld?

Holyfield was at 100% when he beat Bowe in their rematch and he could fight for an entire fight and if it wasn't for Emanual Stewart helping Holyfeild not be sucked into a brawl, then Bowe would have most likely won that fight as well.

Andrew Golota is actually the hardest puncher that Bowe has faced. Pound for pound you make a case that Hide hits harder but at heavyweight, Andrew is cleary the better and more accurate puncher. Bowe was also past his best and he wasn't stopped in neither of those fights. He had a great chin when he was in his peak. When Evander first made the move to heavyweight, he was knocking guys out from accumulation and had some good pop in his punches and Bowe seemed to asborbed them easily. Even when Lennox stopped Bowe in the Olympics, he was TKOed stading up so im not quite feeling that weak chin logic.

I agree that Lennox would have stopped Bowe because he would have been too much for him. A tall good fast pure boxer/puncher like that overwelmes Bowe. Which is why i would still favor Golota over Bowe even when he was in his prime, and thats if he keeps a good head that is. Either of the Klitschko's, peak Lewis, or Golota has that style that Bowe wouldn't be able to deal with. They are just too tall, technically superior and too good of pure boxers. He would look better against opponents like Tyson.

Bowe has the best chance at beating the green Lewis that first came on the scene, he was more clumbsy, stiff, and open for straight counter right hands.
Im not biased and don't care about nationality or race. Facts are facts
