Do jaw shapes in any way have an effect on punch resistance?

Some people have strong, sturdy looking jaws. Look at this pic of Vitali, for example. It is one hard looking mandible.

Some people say fighters with narrow, pointy chins aren't very durable - but Wach has one and his is like granite.

Does jaw structure have any impact on taking a punch? or is it either you have a good chin or you don't?

    I don't think so.
But i would say that having a little jaw could be useful because it makes a little more difficult to be hit on it, which is one of the most dangerous points to be hit on.

physical traits must have something to do with punch resistance but I've never seen any one trait be a foolproof asset.

I think it might be a combination of factors like bone density and mass of jaw and skull, musculature of the neck, amount of total lifetime trauma received, etc.

I believe the last one is crucial in that we've all seen "chins" erode over time (ex. Cabbage-UFC), and fighters who were KO'd often became more prone to being put out(ex. Roy Jones-boxing).

there was a survey done and it found the bigger the bone size the better punch resistance you have, obviously there are other things to take into concideration as well.
the survey found that pac had one of the biggest wrist sizes in his division. but obviously since then he got knocked out cold from marquez.

Someone ought to x-ray Amir Khans jaw and study it.Perhaps then we would have a better understanding of this issue.I suspect it will have remarkable resemblence to David Price's jaw.

A little. In physics it is easier to crack a long and thin peice, but harder to crack a shorter and thicker peice of the same substance

In boxing a strong neck and big head help too

That Chicago Polish guy Fonfara has surprising good punch resistance for a guy with a really skinny neck and pointy chin. I expect him to crumble when I see him get hit, but I think he's only been down once. Of course, he tested positive for steroids in 2009.

Maruisz Wach has a massive jaw and look at his chin.

HBO said Valuev's head was the size of a Volkswagen.

It think boxing gloves effect big, heavy, slower fighters more than smaller, fast fighters.

Imagine getting punched by Valuev bareknuckle or in a MMA gloves? His power comes from his size, the gloves pad that and soften the blow in boxing gloves. Someone like Mike Tyson, his power comes from his handpseed, the speed and velocity behind the punch is not effected very much by boxing gloves.

I think it's neck size. Khan has a strong jawline but a skinny thin neck. RJJ also had a really thin neck.
