Before a judge sits down to score a fight do they warm up by watching old fights and scoring them? Does anyone know if judges have routines before they go ring-side to score? It seems like a pretty specific state of mind that needs a sharp eye, I assume professional judges usually do something to get "in the zone" to score.
I said long ago that they need to VADA test judges and especially refs for PEDs. I'm sure many US refs are on EPO and that a high percentage of their judges are juicing too
I probably wouldn’t want to see judges, prepare for a fight by watching the fighter that they’re going to be scoring. I feel like it creates expectations and could affect judging that fighter, especially if they are refereeing a rematch and watching the first fight to prepare.
I was thinking more along the lines of historical stuff rather than the fighters they're about to score. Maybe a judge watches back some fights known for controversial scoring like Leonard-Hagler, Zarate-Pintor, or any of the Norton-Ali fights. I agree with your point though.
That's an interesting question. I wonder how much boxing the refs and judges watch in their spare time. I don't know if it's like one of those things where you make it your profession and it takes the enjoyment out of it to do it when you're not getting paid. I could see some people trying to do a routine that relaxes their mind or maybe something active since they're going to be sitting for a while. I suppose the main event judges would get warmed up judging the undercard or at least the main supporting bout
Do judges even have a good angle to see the fight? I've done some corner work with a few amateurs and sitting at ringside , I can't see Sh*t like half the time.. can't tell if our guy is landing , or its being blocked or what, and vice versa. Sometimes I hear the crowd react and have no idea who did what.... cornering is allot harder than I thought it was.. But if Judges are at ring side like they are at amateur boxing , its just not a good angle. Also allot of Judges are dinosaurs , even if their eye sight isn't in question their focus and reactions are... the whole thing needs to be overhauled.
I remember working an amateur card doing gloves and hand wraps and got to sit ringside for the last fight. Was 1-1 going into the third. From my vantage point red corner clearly won, 3 judges scored blue giving blue the win. Ringside you don't have the luxury of zoomed in cameras at the best angles
Wonder whats the best way around this.. Maybe having Judges review through a monitor, for big fights.
Idea sounds funny but it's not a bad suggestion. The first couple bouts scoring an amateur night can be rusty, if you are there to judge one fight only it may not be the best performance.
