Hi, everyone, just have a question, ...do most professional fighters run? Running helps burn calories, increase cardio-vascular fitness and endurance, but does it have some other benefits? Does it help with your mental preparation too, for example? Unless plagued by joint problems, why would a fighter choose not to run?
If you are a professional fighter, you have to run, or else you aren't going to go too far. Unless a fighter has some type of injury in which he physically can't do his roadwork, in which case he really shouldn't be having a fight, then he needs to run. Some fighters have been known to blow off roadwork, which is just laziness, but it always comes back to haunt them in the long run.
You don't need it, there are many ways to achieve fitness. Ps. running and roadwork are not the same.
Most do yes almost all one who doesnt is Juan Diaz he does alot of work on the stair stepper machine and swims alot.
Evander Holyfield doesn't do traditional roadwork, he does interval type stuff and he's got pretty good cardio. Here is the link. http://www.sportsci.org/news/news9709/hatfield.html
One of the biggest parts to me is, if you dont have the mentality to wake up early and run, or at least run, you dont have the mentality to fight.
I didn't work it out, boxing has been around way before I was and fighters have been doing roadwork for years, so this isn't something I made up. And although I never turned pro I did box competitively and doing roadwork is very necessary and makes a huge difference.
Ok, those things are more of a new school approach to roadwork, and do work. Some fighters mix these exercises in with actual traditional roadwork to change up the routine.
Bull****. I hate early morning and never wake up early to run (nor does Ricky Hatton, who always runs after he works out). Not only that, but the traditional reason to run early, as soon as you wake up, is that it's more effective at burning fat and making weight-if you're in a position like me, where you don't have to cut, waking up and running from a cold start is just annoying and boring.
There's other ways to get your cardio up. Running is actually quite harsh on your body. I love running though, but only do it about twice a week. TO get the rest of my cardio up I box, focusing mainly on sparring twice a week now, and swim 2-3 times a week. Swimming is a lot better for you. Isn't hard on your joints. Just look at Berto in his last fight, and they said he did LOTS of swimming, and that's how he's in such good shape.
