Do people understand Golovkin is 36/37 years old?

So.. what changed in the two fights? Besides Golovkin's age?
What was so visibly different that you would say that Golovkin is clearly feeling his age now?

The pressure style, which relies so much on physical attributes, is generally going to be the first of the styles to decline.

As said in another thread, generally pressure fighters are on the way down by 33-34, and decline is often sharp. Compared to say, a pure boxer, whom can remain near the top of their game into their late 30s.

    Obviously there are exceptions.

Canelo will "legit" win a third fight IMO. At 37, GGG will be ancient for a pressure fighter and will not be able to improve.

GGG looked slower, missed open chances to counter, and was hesitant. The last one is really a telling sign of an aged fighter. He was roughing Canelo up when he did throw.

I wouldn't say he was prime in the first fight either.....

Since Brook he has shown vulnerability.

The problem is that GGG has a young fighters style. One that heavily relies on a high work rate.....Which obviously reduces quickly with age.

I thought tonight, despite being slower to execute his normal style, he adapted terrifically and put on a masterful display of using the jab to nullify a quicker fighter.

In all honesty, i don't see Canelo as a truly elite fighter anyway.
    He struggled with Trout/Lara.

A 36 year old Canelo, will not be in a position to beat a 28 year old Canelo.....
That for me is the difference.

A 35/36 year old GGG, is at very worst, even with Canelo head to head.

ggg knows his reactions arent the same. people were asking why ggg didnt fire when we could all see the openings canelo gave him, he could see them too, but they would close before he could fire. for most fighters, that means not being able to pull the trigger, so they do nothing. there is a reason ggg just went berserker on vanes and not canelo.
if its an internally triggered move, ggg will still look as fast as ever, its when his movement is externally triggered that he has slowed. hes slower off the line now, and that spells death to a sprinter.

I agree with most of your points.

But i never saw Golovkin as a high output fighter. I have a strong dislike for punch stats but they show that Golovkin is still himself.

Canelo having a though time with Trout/Lara has little to do with Golovkin. Different styles and approaches.

And to assume a 36 year old Canelo automatically looses to a 36 year old Golovkin has little to do with anything.

Golovkin being able to adapt so well and let his hands go so well in the final rounds shows that he is still more than capable at the world level.

    Agreed.

A post of mine from the other day with a few amendments

So we have longtime GGG sparring partner and current WBC SMW champion David Benavidez saying that he's noticed that GGG has lost some power over the years.

And here we have David Haye saying he feels his own power diminished with age and that it's not just the fights that take their toll on you and do damage but the training camps do as well

Froch saying exactly the same - that he knows how he felt at 36 years old

And here's what Andre Ward had to say about the toll training and fighting takes on a fighter physically and mentally

''I think what people gotta realize is that, you know they look at my age now of 32 and they don't realize how long I've been doing this since I was 9 years old. That's 22, 23 years.''

--Andre Ward on his 22-23 year long pro career

"People see what I do fight night, they see under the lights, but they don't see the toil, they don't see the grind, they don't see just the pain, the physical pain that you go through, not just in the fights, but to prepare and to get ready for those battles," he said.

"I felt the physicality of the sport, not just in the ring stuff, but the training and the preparation, start to take its toll on me for the last two or three years and I bit down and continued to push through and at this point, it's time and I know it's time."

“I want to be clear — I am leaving because my body can no longer put up with the rigors of the sport and therefore my desire to fight is no longer there,” Ward, 33, said in a statement on his website. “If I cannot give my family, my team, and the fans everything that I have, then I should no longer be fighting.”

“I’ve been boxing for 23 years, and just the cumulative effect of all the training and all the fights, it just starts to wear on you, and it starts to take your desire,” Ward said

Well GGG had a far more extensive amateur career than all of them. In fact, he had 38 more amateur fights than all of theirs combined and it's common knowledge that GGG trains like a maniac, which is something lots of fighters who've trained alongside him have commented on. Even Joe Joyce who is super fit and strong commented on how hard he trains.

    Joyce's manager too.

''Being around Big Bear and in close proximity to ‘GGG’ has already has given Joe a spring in his step and I’m sure this will only be good for him moving forward.

“It also helps when Gennady is genuinely the nicest man you’ll ever meet. He just wants to help everyone and gave Joe the warmest of welcomes.

“Gennady talks like your next door neighbour but trains like a demon and that can only rub off on Joe.''

But somehow GGG is immune to the ageing process and the wear and tear of fighting and training for over 25 years, having almost 390 fights amateur and pro whilst fighting with a very aggressive style taking a ton of punishment along the way. Anyone who thinks GGG who in their own words gets hit a lot hasn't diminished is a moron.

    Slower? Really?
Compared to Golovkin of what fight?

Missed counter opportunites? Well he was facing one of his best opponents to date.

And of course he was hesitant. Canelo was making him miss and pressing him back.

And Canelo was roughing him up when he was throwing.

The only telling sign of age was Golovkin throwing so few punches. And even that argument goes out of the window when you look at the last 2/3 rounds.

Don´t get me wrong, he is a 36 year old athlete. But he has lost little with age. He is still elite.
