Do people who favour one fighter over the other because of power make you laugh?

Power + speed. That has made Tyson great, and Kovalev will be great too.

 

If someone only has power then it only goes so far. A person with power is always danger. Whether it is in the street or the ring. Most people in a bar that are looking for a fight will not choose someone that looks as though they have power. They usually want an easy go of it. In the ring a person with power can hurt you even if you have a certain level of skill. To disregard that aspect of a fighter as useless is silly. A person with power and a skill set is even more dangerous. Give that person a good chin...even more so. Give that peson the ability to think while fighting...the same. Give that person the ability to relax and conserve energy plus speed. well....anyone should get the point. There are a lot of assets that can come together to make a well rounded fighter. to ignore power is just dumb. Kovalev is a special type of fighter. Could he lose against Ward.....yes. Possible.....not probable.

 

After the B-Hop schooling and domination I thought people here had learned their lesson about seeing Kovelev as some one dimensional puncher.
Many of the same that were certain that professor Hopkins would school that robotic plodder, and later favored Pascal over him too, again seem to have forgotten about Kova's boxing skills and act like he can only punch hard and not much else.

 

Power is a great attribute to have, the problem is you still have to deliver that power to be effective and that's where some people fail when assessing a match up.

If you're picking Kovalev to win because of his power you DKSAB. If you pick him because of his accuracy with that power then that's different. Kovalev showed against an old BHop that he was more than just power, he had footwork and boxing skills to go with that power.

But having said that, he hasn't fought anyone like Ward. BHop was too far gone in reality to compare to Ward right now. Can he apply his power consistently enough against Ward? How will he cope with being clinched so much, how will he cope with missing more than he ever has before. Can Kovalev adapt mid fight like we have seen Ward do?

 

That wasn't much of an adjustment. He was just being sloppy before, I'm talking about more than just that but altering strategy, techniques to change a fight.

That is for course if Ward forces Kova to adapt at all. I honestly can't pick a winner, I'm a fan of both and my loyalties are divided.

 

Power is a double edge sword. Most fighters who have it come to rely on it.

Theres only 1 active fighter whos power i see as a game changer and thats GGG. Every guy has a plan they come out hit him with a few good shots but as soon as GGG lands a solid shot u can see it on their face. They suddenly go into panic mode, iv never seen power do that consistantly to top level fighters.

 

Yes it's that visible though most would concede that GGG has massive ability to be able to land his power at will either to the head or body,Tyson in his pomp had the same effect,never really seen Julian Jackson did he have the same effect?

 

With Julian Jackson it mostly was competitive until he landed the right shot... then it usually ended right there and then. Massive one punch KO power.

 

agreed the thing with ggg is when he hits you all your game plan is out the window you jusy focus on how to avoid it

 

I just hope the fight happens. I hope Ward is on his game and I hope Kovalev stays patient because, for sure, Ward will frustrate him.
