Do pro boxers usually hit harder tham amateur fighters?

Every amatuer punches harder in the pros because of the gloves and handwraps period.

No current heavyweight hits harder than Felix Savon did, and he had amateur gloves and handwraps.

 

I mean it all depends on the fighter but between the padding in amateur gloves(where specifically it is compared to say Reyes gloves) and the amateue point system, professional boxing by nature places a far greater emphasis on power punching and sitting down on your punches more, and also a greater emphasis on body punches.

That said I know a lot of guys that grew up fighting in the amateurs that hit harder and were more skilled and much better overall fighters than the cab driver/tomatoes can -- journeyman level fighters. There were a lot of decent to good to very good to even great amateur boxers that never turned pro for numerous different reasons.

 

Teofilio Stevenson hit very hard as an amateur (quasi-pro). Nick Wells hit hard enough to have knocked pros out need be.

 

And if Felix Savon had his hands wrapped pro style with Reyes gloves he would hit harder then with amatuer rule wraps and dense foam concussion reducing amatuer style gloves.

 

Quite often when a top AM turns over you will hear their trainer use cliches like "Sitting down on your punches more" etc

Like another poster said the most important thing in Amateur boxing is the contact rather than the power.
