hey i was wondering what do you guys think about this.

guys like hopkins and holyfield always get away with fouling, and the refs almost "dont see it" or call it accdental but they these fighters get fouled back, the refs always seems catch the other guy and take points away etc...

    why is that???

i mean this is not 1906 all these refs watch boxing and guys like hopkins have a rep as dirty fighters, so if these refs were on the level they would watch these guys even closer....

but they dont, this is a puzzle to me...i dont to say they are paid off or told my promotors what to do etc....

but how else do you explain it, something has to be up...

guys like hopkins cause damaging fouls almost every fight, and it is never called...

the hopkins-jones fight was a prime example,
hopkins head-butted like crazy, and held etc but the ref pretended not to see anything but as soon as jones did anything, boom the ref punishes jones....

its also interesting that guys like hopkins never want to fight outside of the usa...

if you dont think these fouls make a difference, let someone give you a hard headbutt and see how it feels lol

Arthur Abraham is an extremely dirty fighter, but the first time he ever suffered in repurcussions was in the Dirrell fight.

    great post.

    was thinking the same.

Im a fan of hopkins. but the fight the other night was crossing the line fouling with his head non stop then all the theatrics when he got hit with a little rabbit punch.

I would've absoultley loved it, if Toney Weeks (i think he was ref) said Nard stop play acting you aint fooling anyone!... ahahaha

as I write this post, I have just thought Bernard is a big player/ something like a co owner in golden boy . Maybe these refs are scared to mess up a hopkins bout at this stage :(

maybe hopkins holds that power over them sad if true

No need to do that, the referee should just do his job and start counting.

Of course, the referee is human too after all.

No big surprise here, even if the referee doesn't really intend to give anyone any undue advantage, the fighters' images sometimes stay at the back of his mind and influence his actions in the ring subconsciously.

Imagine the further bias indeed if the referee isn't on the up and up.

You think Hopkins gets away with it because he Refs turn a blind eye? Not even close, Hopkins gets away with it because he has mastered hiding it. Most of the dirty stuff happens in clinches, where the ref can't see. And the stuff that doesn't happen in the clinch is done simultaneous to a legal legit shot. So for example he could throw a headbutt but he will throw it in the middle of a legit punch so that when his opponent recoils it looks like the punch did the damage. He has mastered this stuff from fighting in the Philly gyms.

yeah ok, this is excatly what his promotors want you to think,

and like i said this is not 1907, everyone watches boxing and you cant hide this stuff all that well ESPICALLY EVERY FIGHT....

and even he was so good at hiding it, because we have tapes of past fights, a fair ref would watch him closely, more so then the other guy....

but they don't....gee i wonder why.....

oh yeah he is so good at hiding even though the ref has a thoustand replays of his other fights where he does the same bs every fight....

example, he gives jones a rabbit punch, jones him one back, he drops on his knees and cries like a girl.....and lets see how does the ref punish....

Dude you sit on your ass watching it on TV. If isn't the same as being in the boxing ring. For some reason you think the ref is going see a butt, when you saw it on a replay. Think about the positioning of the ref in many of the "illegal" blows or butts. They aren't paid off, they aren't ignoring it, they simply don't see it happening. We get the luxury of the replay and HDTV's and different camera angle then the ref. Until you've refereed a series of fights or even just sat in the first few rows of a fight don't talk **** about something you haven't actually thought out.

its still surprising that some people think holyfield headbutt against tyson was a fiction while the replay shows otherwise in both fight

To answer the original thread question, of course. Certain fighters do get preferential treatment from refs, and it's been going on as long as the sport's been around.

I'll let everyone in on another secret before that thread gets made: sometimes, it's actually harder to win when you're fighting in your opponent's hometown/country because the judges won't give you as much credit. I know you're all shaking your heads in disbelief at the prospect of it, but it's true.

some guys just know how to foul, when to foul, and know the limits, imo

it's like that in every sport

    you missed my point,

ofcourse it's harder to see these fouls in the ring without replay and all that
but these refs, when they are not working, they watch boxing and see the same replays that the rest of us see....

so come fight time, they should watch a guy like hopkins closer and thusly would be more likely to see a foul,

    but they dont

this is why i said this is not not 1907, all of hopkins+holyfield etc fights are high profile so everyone sees them...so in their next a fair ref should be watching them closer

    but they dont
