Yeah, I know. He was number 1 with the WBO, When Lacy had the IBF, Kessler had the WBA and Beyer had the WBC.

I would say that they recgoinise it as a major title, americans that is. If not the most prestigious one.

I think what he means is when DLH has a WBO bauble the American media sure as hell recognise it as a legit world title.

To a certain extent i think it is regarded as the poor relative. i really dont know why .. Its very established nowadays.. 1988 was a long time ago.. fighters like Hearns, Mercer , Bowe, Moorer held the version, its time they stopped shunning it just because some biased fans don't like a few of the holders..

Barrera started the global recognition imo, when he held no official 'championship' but was still recognized a linear featherweight champ he would wear the WBO badge and bring the belt to the ring.

There is a big four now.

Go see who they have rated at number one for middleweight then repeat that statement.

Well its swings and roundabouts isnt it. Ther ranking system is bizarre but look at the 'prestigous' WBA, you can have two WBA world champs at one weight! Look at the WBC title emiritus which aparently will let any old champ back for a shot, and how they gave Tszyu champion emiritus status so they can cash in on the back of Aturo Gatti. Or how the IBF will take back their belt in a heart beat if you dont follow their rankings system, even if their ranking system means you have to sit through a match you have already seen or dont even care about, and isnt veryt relevent in the first place.

All fair points & for all those who think I have an agenda read my thread where I make a scathing attack on the WBA. Just one question, would you be defending the WBO so vehemently had your favourite fighter not worn their strap for so long?

Illustrating they are still a Warren title.

In my defence of the WBO, in which it was hardly vehement, I used Marco Antonio Barrera not Joe Calzaghe...

    Fair enough.

Do you not agree they are a Warren title though? How else could Gary Lockett of all people be ranked number one in the world?

The IBF was started because the WBA/WBC was "unfair" to American fighters. @ the same time the WBO started because the WBA/WBC was unfair to Euro fighters. Really were.

The IBF got instant recognition because Holms jumped to the IBF to continue to fight prospects with less than 16 fights.
The WBO took two years before they had a Champion, and Itilian fella starts with D....not going to look it up, but he was fairly good. they didn't just appoint anyone Champion like the IBF but had a couple fighters fight for it. Odd, that.

Now IMO all four belts are =.
    three belts too many.

Any one who is the still One and Only European Champion...there is no WBC/WBA/IBF/WBO European Champ...just the European Champ(26 countries) and a slightly jr. EU (@16 countries) champ. They are stripped of their European champinship if they sign for a World Championship, win or lose. IMO any European Champ should be in every belt factory's top 10.
