Do the lighter weights need to have as many weight classes as there are?

It seems that in the lower weight range in boxing there are too many divisions or is it just me?

The divisions are incremented by a mere 2-3 pounds, is there any need for this in particular to lower weights or did they just squeeze in too many? Wouldn't it be better if they got rid of a few and make the differences between the weight classes more reasonable (e.g. 6-8 pounds?)

  2. Not need for minimum, any of the super or junior weights anymore.

There are too many across the entire spectrum.

I'd be happy if they reduced it to 9 - the original 8 + cruiser.

We don't need half of them, big guys or little guys. That's why there isn't any depth in any of the divisions.

I'd reduce things to straw-weight (105), the original eight, and cruiser (200).

    Ten in all.

There are too many weights already, but with the lowest one you have the situation that one out of six active boxers fight for a "world" title at at one part of their careers. Also not even a single US or EU fighter. You can't call that even remotely competitive.

Ten weight classes, and eight belts!
