Maybe its me. But it seems the top British prospects in Kahn, Price, Harrsion, and such seem to have low punch resistance. Even a great like Lennox Lewis was stopped 2x on the basis of one punch. Is this a fluke? Who are the top British talents / or prospects that can take a good punch?
At one time he was a red hot prospect. In this thead, I speak in the past and present sense. If you want to throw in David Haye in the mix ( who I feel has a suspect chin for sure ) so be it.
No it is a myth. Eubank? Calzage? Reid? Froch? Hatton? Hamed? Lewis took plenty of big shots from big heavys. He was being landed on flush by Vitali when he was way past his prime. He was up at 6 from a bomb by McCall...his chin was decent, not great but nothing like the weakness people make it out to be. Ali was dropped heavily several times, but had a great chin, likewise lots of British fighters like Hamed were never close to being stopped and against big hitters. Only Khan and Harrison have real glass. People talk about Hatton as if he was KOd with one shot...but he wasn't at all and he got up and was then dropped again with a flurry of shots. He has taken big shots from Tsyzu, Tackie and Phillips. A very solid chin all round. You could call Benns chin shaky but in reality he got up from one of the biggest bangers the division has ever seen and soaked it up to fire back. He had a decent enough chin for sure. If we listed Pavlik, Dawson, Taylor, RJJ we could start saying that Americans have shaky chins, into the past Dempsey was KOd in one round by Jim Flynn and was out for 20 seconds, Patterson was stopped multiple times and floored 7 times by Johannsen. Joe Louis was dropped multiple times by various fighters and stopped... And so on...Hearns etc...
I wonder if the introduction of head guards into the amateur game has reduced the strength or punch resistance of some fighters?
I've read a lot of arguments about head guards and brain trauma, its not a given that they reduce the force of a punch effectively, spreading the force of a blow over a wider area may be worse that keeping it more localized.
i dont think you cans say harrison has a bad chin. Calzaghe, Hatton can all take punches. Theres just as many fighters elsewhere that cant take a punch.
Nah I think we are the same as every where else. Some fighters have great chins, some have good chins and some are very dodgy.
I think, somewhere, there is an argument for it to be makig a difference to your shot taking ability. Its amazing the difference in taking a shot with a headguard to without.
Funny but I was suprised to see Witter on his arse. Never seen him in any danger of being dropped. Big hoofing wallop he got like. But he was up and back to normal a few seconds later. I suppose that's a good chin really, just not as good as I thought it was.
i think audley doesnt have a completely glass jaw it's just his damn near non workrate that makes the other guy do what he wants I.E. hit him on the jaw
