Do the 'top level' boxers just get hate no matter what?

From Wlad and Joshua, to Mayweather and Ward.....Why do the top guys always get hate?

First I thought it was purely down to the style of the above....until I got to Joshua.....

Wlad was often labelled by some as 'boring' and a 'clincher'.
Mayweather was always given stick for his defensive style.
Ward has often been branded as a 'cheat' and 'boring' too.
But then you have Joshua who is always wanting to come forward, have an open fight and KO his opponent.....the guy arguably can't even fight on his back foot.

So next I thought it was because of an unwillingness to fight the best......But they all did.

Wlad held the belts as world champion for longer than any other heavyweight in history, so he had to take on all comers.
Mayweather fought a prime Canelo despite being past his best and eventually took on Pac, when they were both past their best.
Ward was forced to fight the best when taking part in the SMW super six.
Joshua has a better resume than any heavyweight I have seen in his first 20 fights.

    Is it just jealousy?

    Or is it something else?

My theory - On their way to becoming the best in their respective divisions, they've had to beat many others on the way, and the fans of those who took the losses became salty and began hating.

    Probably.
Some just get more when it's justified (I mean, who would like someone like John Ruiz, Broner, or clear and proven cheaters?), or when they're from the "wrong" part of the world, taking bread out of the mouths from the boxers that "deserve it more".

But most of all it's about rivalry.

Yeah it’s a fact of life in all sports,

You really have to dig through a lot of garbage on here to hear some interesting opinions

Believing everything you read from a forum like this is akin to getting marriage counseling from your in-laws.

The more popular boxer is - the more haters he has, it's a fact.

However, when boxer retires, the number of his haters decreases and mostly hardcore haters stay.

I hate all winners.... unless they're British. Well maybe hate is a strong word, but I almost always root for the underdog and want to see "the man" get taken down a peg or two. But then when they start to fade they normally grow on me and I end doing a full 180 and start rooting for them.

I'm the same with all sports, but even though I might have wanted to see the likes of Mike Tyson or more recently GGG lose, I still love watching them box and can appreciate their craft.

Haters are a sign of validation that you've arrived. People don't bother to hate unless they're invested in your fights.

And they're a good thing. When you're talking boxing business, the opposite "I love you" isn't "I hate you". It's "I don't care".

Makes me really LoL IRL to see all the bashing and such. If you like/love the sport of boxing, you will love all aspects of the sport. People bash fighters for the most ridiculous claims. No chin, boring, Hype, defensive wizard, too aggressive/wild etc. Look, if the boxer does crappy antics out of the ring and is a pure A-hole, that's understandable but not liking a boxer because his/her style works, why bash on it? Why not enjoy it for what it is and what its worth to this great sport. Most fools miss the greater picture. There are no 2 boxers that are identical, this is what makes it most exciting. Styles can be similar but one can do it better than the other. If there is a once in a life timer that comes around (RJJ, Pac, SRR, FMJ, SRL, etc) let them be them and enjoy it because you may never see anything that amazing in this sport again.

it also depends what others define as bashing. If someone gets knocked out senseless easily by a retiree, that is just a statement of fact, not hating.

But an overzealous fan can interpret this fact as hating...and they will then go helbent to prove the other person is bashing their man, ignoring all the good things they write about the fighter.

That is - the overzealous fan sees hate when innocent facts are given to them.

Everybody hates somebody.. There's not much worse than haters who can give it but can't take it. Plenty of queens like that around here :gey:

i dont think this is true, except perhaps for criminals etc. wifebeaters, wife cheats, GBH offenders, pimps (Chickenson, Floyd Chicken, Cowerzaghe as examples). Monzon was a prime example.

Its normal to despise criminal behaviour - thats ok.

The you've got clean cut guys like Hagler, Froch and many others. Perhaps gassiev is one of them, seems a nice guy from what we've seen.

in between theres guys who are fairly clean cut but have brought the sport into dubious ground for any kind of reason, who are not hated but generally looked down on as well as admired by the same person.
