I remember this was a thing. IIRC, it was three successful defenses of the British title earned one. I always thought that was a neat thing. You could be Brit champ, not necessarily be world-class but you were a national champion as a professional (which is in itself an accomplishment) AND you still had something to which to aspire to sort of cement yourself as an all-timer of sorts in that category. Do they still have that? Is Lonsdale still the major boxing equipment manufacturer in England even, and does it still have a presence? Curious poster from the U.S.
I’m pretty sure they still do it it’s just that nobody can be bothered to and more money is made from winning other titles which is a shame really. Also it can be quite difficult to defend the British title 3 times as most weight classes over here are usually stacked with tough opponents. I’m trying to remember who was the last to win one? Possibly Joyce or Josh Taylor maybe? I could be wrong
It is a thing still but Biggest issue is fighters avoiding each other. Board puts fights to purse bids but alot don't get made. For example at super feather. Cacace sharp barrett were all under the same banner got matched but never faced each other all fought for some internationalranking titles instead. Currently at feather nick ball (looks quality) but pulled out of a vacant title shot against another unbeaten fighter. Sunny Edwards called out every man and dog and couldn't get a Fight to dend his title. People waiting for him to move on. Its like people think a loss at that level can define your career. Look at groves and degale they fought for it both went on to have great careers.
Lonsdale make amazing trainers (sneakers) these days, you can get them from sports direct. Get yourself a pair and start a trend in the states.
did not know that, that's something to look back on positively. I forget cos he crammed so much in early on.
Thanks for all the replies. Seems a shame that this isn’t quite as big of a deal as it once was — I’d rather win a Lonsdale belt than be the WBA Regular West End of East Europe Gold Intramual champ.
Fabio Wardley, current British heavyweight champion, has publicly stated it's his goal to win the belt outright: https://www.eadt.co.uk/sport/23428987.fabio-wardley-beats-michael-coffie-report-reaction-pictures/
