Ay, versus Samuel Antwi. Here's the rest of the Lonsdale belt holders and how far off they are: Fabio Wardley @ HW needs 3 more British title victories Dan Azeez @ LHW needs 1 more Mark Heffron @ SMW needs 3 more Denzel Bentley @ MW needs 2 more (and has one lined up Saturday versus Kieran Smith) Josh Kelly @ LMW needs 3 more Dalton Smith @ SLW needs 1 more Gavin Gwynne @ LW needs 2 more Nathaniel Collins @ FW needs 3 more Sean McGoldrick @ BW needs 3 more Tommy Frank @ SFLW needs 2 more (his draw with Craig Derbyshire does count as a defense, and has one lined up with Jay Harris next month)
Lonsdale is a cheap and nasty brand sold to poor people by sports direct in the uk these days. Which probably helped towards it not holding much value in boxing these days, sadly.
Aside from both having been separately named after Hugh Cecil Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale, the sports equipment and the championship have naught to do with each other. I don't think anybody that knows or cares about the Lonsdale outright tradition is having their opinion marred by faulty gear.
I think this thread has kind of made your point. The brand association from cheap sports stuff, coupled with the British title having less lustre than it used to - thanks to alphabet international, silver, etc titles, you could see how today's generation might think it's connected to the sports gear somehow.
100% this. Shows would always be packed out because there was a British title on the line, but sadly like you say it is unfortunate that it is almost forgotten now. To this day i still believe it to be the best looking belt in world boxing and worth fighting for, it has given us many great fights over the years.
I occasionally DJ under the guise Gary Lonsdale and I have an old school Lonsdale t-shirt like the one Ali wore. I also have the Lonsdale tartan tracksuit worn by Colin Farrell in The Gentlemen, I also have a lot of fake gold.
I used to like my Firetrap stuff back in the day before Sport Direct bought out the brand. Used to feel real classy in that gear. Now look like Norman out with Big Mary at steak night in 'Spoons.
Just own it man, that's what I do, you're right and they're wrong. The Lonsdale t-shirt I have is actually really well made, fitted and looks the b*ll*cks, as for the tracksuit, it's all about the confidence, just wear it like a don
